Emmys Censor Sally Field's Anti-War Statement
Los Angeles Times | Tom O'Neil | September 16, 2007 11:41 PM
"If mothers ruled the world, there wouldn't be any god -" Emmy winner Sally Field said before the Emmycast cut her off her sound and pointed the camera away from the stage so viewers would be distracted. Cut off were the words "god-damned wars in the first place."
"How can this be?" she asked when she won best actress in a drama series for her work as matriarch Nora Walker on "Brothers & Sisters." While the two-time Oscar winner already has two Emmys, this was her first nomination for series work, and she bested a field that included favorite Edie Falco of "The Sopranos."
"This belongs to all the mothers of the world - may they be seen and valued," she said in a heartfelt speech that was only partially heard by Emmywatchers in the US while CTV in Canada did not cut her off.

There's something to be said for decorum, for not using an event such as this as a platform for political statement.
But if she had praised the war, I doubt Fox would have cut her off.
If it were just a guy with his finger on a mute button monitoring the time delay, you could say he over-reacted to the profanity. But if they moved the camera away, this was a deliberate effort at censorship, motivated by Fox's political values.
I wonder how many actors will show up next year. |

Society is getting more Orwellian everyday. In 2004, Madonna had her music video canned & hastily withdrawn, for alleged criticism of the Iraq War.
And did any tv editor stop to think she may actually be right? |

Yes we do, but we choose to not bring up youthful indiscretions. |

| Sally Field comes out against the Iraq war, yet somehow it still goes on. We might have to send in a Barbara Streisand/Sean Penn combo the next time. Then the troops'll be coming home. |

She won the right to go up say whatever she wants to in her acceptance speech.
How long do they have? 1 minute?
Same thing has been to others over the years.
Praise is goooooood, criticism baaaaaddd
Her views were simply politically "incorrect". |

Did anyone see the clip? My god, did she ramble on. Fox saved her from herself, and saved the viewers from having to listen to her incoherent blabbering.
Does anyone remember her Oscar speech? When it comes to acceptance speeches, she's a train wreck. |
