A student on my board was writing about a figure skating show on the weekend.
See if you can figure out what they mean.
Quote: |
This ice show's name is 'super stars on ice.'
But this ice show is disperse.
Grounds is a conflagration.
|
I took a couple moments to open up onelook.com and check the definitions of two words. I know what "disperse" means, but wasn't sure what it could mean in this sentence. Were there not enough people there? Next word was "conflagration." Do you know the definition of that word? Turns out there is a much simpler word that can be used in its place. "Fire."
Here is my correction.
Quote: |
This ice show was interrupted.
There was a huge fire.
|
What other words have you heard Koreans use that you never knew?
I'd like to add "languid" to the beginning of this list. |

Honestly I've given up keeping track of all the random obscure words they pull out of their dictionaries. They always wonder why I laugh when they come up with words I haven't seen since Crit and Theory.
Conflagrate makes no sense, though. Does this kid somehow not know the word fire? |

I went to visit the enation side of my family.
It means the "line of descent traced through the maternal side of the family." A 5th grader wrote that. |

Machine translation. Having taught university here, I can spot it a mile away. |

Yeah, I got my job through worknplay. I'm hoping to avoid creating a conflagaration with the situation, though. If it's something I really felt I deserve, I could just insist upon it and probably get it. |

Nah, it's not a big deal. They just think of me as a perv now, I guess. But considering the VP said that if I ever do bring porn, bring it up so he can look at it, I don't think this is the spark of a conflagaration. That same VP lasciviously flirts with every woman that passes his view and is constantly trying to set me up. I think the women here expect men in general to be pervs, given the boss and now ... me. |
I win at the Internet. |

That reminds me. We need a "word of the day" thread for Korean words. Would be a great resource. |

Actually I will consider him cool for catching me in a spelling mistake. What an awkward word to type. |

Interestingly, "conflagration" is the vocab word that has made the most appearances on past SATs. Don't ask me why; I have no idea. |

Pretty sure conflagration is correct. I just prefer to spell it and pronounce it as conflagaration. Conflagration sounds like something a redneck hick would say. |
