Need some help here!

Got my purse with all my IDs stolen at Uijoengbu station yesterday. Had my credit card cancelled this morn, no worries. Have a photocopy of my passport, no worries. Got the alien card number.

Thing is, once I get a new passport, would my visa be rendered invalid? Anybody been through this?

Ta!

You are required to report your new passport number to immigration and pay a small fee to replace your ARC. I remember it being 10,000won.,

Did you report it to the police? If not, do it now and get a statement or police thingy to show that you reported it to them.

Then go to immi and get a new ARC. You can then let them know what happened and they will tell you to come in as soon as your new passport arrives or something.

Yes, i forgot. You will need a police report if you plan to tell immi it was stolen.

Your 'visa' is not actually a stamp/sticker in your passport - that's only really what gets you across the border your first time under your new legal status.

You actual 'visa' is a record in the computer system at Korean immigration. Once you have your ARC (alien registration card) - it doesn't matter what's in your passport (besides the re-entry stamp).

File a police report, take that to your embassy along with a photocopy of the information page of your lost passport (you made one, right?). Once you get your passport, take it to the immigration office with the same police report, fill out the all-in-one application form, pay your 10 bucks, and you're all done. You'll also need that police report to get your new ARC.

Your visa is fine. Your status of sojourn is defined by your ARC and is on file. As long as you don't leave the country without a re-entry permit your (status of sojourn) visa remains valid until its expiry or extension.

File a police report.

Go to your embassy and apply for a new passport.
(Cost varies with country of origin.)

When you get your new passport, go to immigration and register the new passport. They will put / transfer any valid stamps / re-entry permits into it.

Get your new ARC at the same time (cost is 10k won).

Your embassy will give you more grief than immigration will.

Depending on your country of origin (and efficiency of its embassy) it can take 2-3 days for an "emergency passport" and up to a month for a regular passport.

If you are Canadian you can expect nothing but a run-around, *beep* and abuse from your embassy. They will be less than helpful AND you will need to get replacement copies of your birth certificate and other ID before they will issue you a replacement passport.

I am sorry for your misfortune.

Thanks, guys!

yep, got a photocopy of the info page of the passport, no worries, and the alien card no. Don't plan to leave K land until the winter hols.

Have filed the stolen report to the Aussie embassy online; I'm glad I'd brought my birth cert (just have to find it) here cos my old passport had gotten stolen as well.

I had somebody to call the cops; but it looks like I need a piece of paper. Damn and then some. So I should wait till I get the passport (which would take a month), before reporting to immi? I was planning to do this this arvo, after classes.

You guys have been wonderful.

It happened to me a year ago, someone riding on a motorbike snatched my purse, immediately I reported it to the police, applied a new passport, new bankbook and new ARC. When all of those documents were about to release, one of our school staff called, and said that my purse was returned to them with all the important cards but not the cash.

Now I am holding two of each IDs, but of course those stolen were not valid anymore, the thing is that WAIT for at least ONE WEEK before applying new IDs, maybe your purse will return to you soon, I hope so.

I've already gone to the cops and have the report, and reported the passport stolen to my embassy. I wanna take no chances, my purse could have been stolen by a pro. I'll wait till I get the passport before reporting the lost alien card.

What a drag. At least I'm not going anywhere anytime soon. (Sigh)

You're supposed to get rid of that extra passport, but I've found mine (now voided in the US system) comes in handy when I go to Thailand, and they want to hold your passport as collateral to rent a motorcycle or scooter.
