Quote:
The use of a heroin substitute as a recreational drug is spreading across Britain's prison system 'like wildfire', according to new research. In some prisons as many as 70 per cent of inmates regularly take Subutex illegally, the research found, and many former offenders are returning to civilian life with a taste for the drug...

Looks like an abysmally-failed criminal-justice system to me.

Well, I have some expertise in this area and I would (a) question one assertion in the article and (b) point to a curious omission.

(a) "Subutex, like methadone, is prescribed to heroin users to help wean them off addiction. Available in pill form, it is less addictive and less likely to trigger fatal overdoses than heroin or methadone because it does not suppress breathing as much. It is more expensive than methadone and not prescribed as extensively".

In Europe, I believe Subutex is now prescribed more often, because of the reasons mentioned. And one other reason: Subutex has 'blockers', meaning (again unlike Methadone) this substance is preferable because it cannot be mixed with Heroin. The huge drawback to Methadone prescription is that addicts would mix their Methadone with heroin and increase their tolerance, making their habit worse and therefore having the opposite of its intended effects.

(b) Subutex is also an anti-depressant. It's entirely understandable that people, even those who have no prior experience with heroin, in a prison environment would take such a substance.

I agree with Gopher's conclusion though. Pursuing, arresting, incarcerating drug-users has proved a total waste of time for many years now but societies still don't get the message: end prohibition and stop diverting attention from the pursuit of terrorists, murderers, pedophiles and rapists.

I quite agree with you SPIN. The only people who should be incarcerated are violent criminals. We need alternative sentencing for other crimes. And some of these 'crimes' such as drug abuse should be treated as a public health issue. I don't see how locking up drug abusers helps in the long run. I also agree that drugs should be decriminalised. We need more rational ways to deal with this problem.

I'm rather sick of this 'get tough on crime' bollocks with the Labour party trying to show off to everybody that they are just as bloody backward as the Tories. Under Labour, prison crowding has just got worse, and all prison does is teach you how to be a proper criminal, and decrease your chances of finding gainful employment when you are finally released. And teach you how to abuse drugs, it seems.

Blair & co were too busy chasing the vote of Daily Mail readers and those bloody loons and retards who believe everything 'The Sun Sez.'

Well, it's better than dreaming of sex with pandas, but if you must know I don't do drugs myself, and have no inclination to.
