If a dog is coming at you grab it by the throat and squeeze the windpipe.
Hard.
They really don't like having their air cut off.

Instead of a knife, why not carry a few sausages like those "little smokies"?

100% guaranteed to make a friend out of the meanest dog.

I have the same fear. I solved the barking dog problem by carrying a kettle with me at all times (unless I'm going somewhere formal). If a dog barks at me, I stop, take the kettle off my head and say, "Boshingtang!"

It seems to work. (Once it didn't, but I brained the dog with the kettle and then continued on my way.)

Well there's no treatment for rabies except vaccination. You get bit, you're gonna die.

How about buying a bigger dog? or carry an umbrella, a pound of sausages you use to distract the dog, and fake arms for the dog to chew on while you escape. Oh, and stilts, stilts should work, dogs can't climb stilts.

look all u guys have been leavin such lovely and quaint "solutions" to this very serious problem. and it is a serious problem, even here. don't let the fact that most dogs here don't get much bigger than anaemic rats fool you. they mean little bastards!! but i do think u're unnecessarily clutching at straws. why haven't u realised yet?

all you need to solve this and other problems of similar monumental stature is just one thing.

a packet of mentos. if u have mentos, u don't need knives, sausages, umbrellas or anything. just pop a chewy dragee in ur mouth and an ingenious and hilarious solution will present itself to u immediately.

don't u educated fools watch tv? fresh goes better!!!!

get educated!!!

my neighbor back in vancouver was from some f-ed up country in africa. he was always pulling his belt out to deal with this aggressive pit bull that lived across the street.

i would think that someone from africa has more practical experience dealing with aggressive dogs - therefore my vote is for belts. a knife requires too much close up contact unless it's a sword.

and... *beep* SWORDS!!!

A belt or knife (unless the blade hits a vital spot) isn't going to stop say an truly enraged adult bull mastiff. A baseball bat on the other hand has the reach and heft to take down the biggest dogs. And they are legal to carry. Just use it at other times as a walking stick. Laughing

Alternatively you could also try and purchase pepper spray...

In Mexico/C/America it's a really big problem...

get a small plastic spray bottle, fill it with amonia or bleach,

adjust it to shoot a stream instead of spray...

aim for the eyes/nose when they run at you...

in Thailand your problem will be the reaction of Thai people to a dogs yelping in pain..

they won't be happy, especially for 'temple dogs'...

Mexicans didn't seem to care.

Wow, I've been doing this all wrong. When loose dogs act threatening, I always stop and GLARE at them. Shocked Never tried it on a really big dog, but mid to small dogs have never failed to back down. They retreat a ways and then resume yapping their stupid little heads off.

The best thing to do is run away as fast as you can whilst shouting "here boy sickum". I promise you the dog will not chase you! Very Happy

It's a tried and tested method that never fails, actually I advise you to find the biggest dog you can today, and prove to yourself that this works a treat.

it's a big problem in Romania. Ceaucescu banned pets, so the dogs and cats were turned out into the streets. my stepbrother lived in Bucharest for about 5 years. he was chased down the street by a pack of chihuahua-like dogs. he had to get some rabies shots.

yes, he's a tremendous p ussy.

If you use a knife you will get your arm bitten.
Against a dog..the best weapon is two sticks. Swing one...it may or may not catch it in it's mouth. The second one is for beating it over the head.

I used to live in a neighborhood where adults had to worry about getting mugged by people and children had to worry about getting beat up by bullies or bit by angry dogs.

As a youth, I was relatively unsuccessful with the former, but against dogs and other aggressive fauna, here is what has worked for me:

If a dog is growling at you, don't look it in the eyes.

Pick up a "pretend rock" (if there is a real one even better) from the ground and hurl it at the dog. This will trigger his natural "flight" mechanism.

Continue to pick up "pretend-stones" until you are clearly following the fleeing dog.

The dog will eventually run away scared and you can then proceed to walk fast away. Don't run until the dog is completely out of your sight and you are out of his.

Carrying a knife will not help. As previous posters mentioned, there is too little chance of connect on a small knife blade to strike successfully (compared to say, a long scimitar).

You also risk problems with law enforcement if you are caught carrying a concealed weapon. As a foreigner, you are already under the microscope. It's best not to let them perceive you as a mischief-maker.

**And worse, if you do manage to knick the dog, at best there may be boshintang soup. At worst, PeTA is going to try to come around for some azz-kicking. Smile
