When you think of Korea, what avatar do you choose (and WHY?):

4
5

7
8
9
10
11
12
13
14

I thought those were emoticons, not avatars.
There are days I feel that this pic sums up my view of Seoul, anyway.

Someone had that avatar of the guy dropping his pants in protest over that sports event. I forget which one. That one takes the cake.

Yeah. That one spoke a lot to me about Koreans. Actually, Korean middle-aged men to be precise. I'm going to protest, I'm probably drunk, I'll drop my pants and just stand here. I won't be embarrassed because I'm an ajeossi so no one will dare laugh at me.

Yeah, that pic is great. I just wish that guy stepped back and a bit to his right so that the street arrow was pointing right at him.

It was taken in the summer of 2006, in Seoul, in the early morning hours after a broadcast of the Korea vs. Switzerland game. Korea lost 2-0. Many Koreans, both at the game and in general, felt the first goal allowed was cheap and was the result of shoddy officiating. That guy was protesting.
I was at City Hall for that game, and it was really disappointing to see such poor sportsmanship on the part of fans. After Switzerland scored the second goal---I'm not a soccer fan, but I guess that means it's out of reach---fans started leaving en masse, even though there was a good chunk of time left. So much for the "Reds Go Together" hype that had been going on for a month. I jokingly said to my friend, after the first goal, "looks like we've found a new scapegoat." It wasn't that off the mark.
Here's a blog post about it: http://lostnomad.org/2006/06/25/thatll-certainly-show-them-all-wtf-department/
Here's a hilarious op-ed piece:
Quote:
At the break of the red dawn, we yelled together Dae Han Min Guk, the name of our country that rarely served our needs or pleasure. In the daybreak, our dream of the second round was shattered and our red souls were scorched black. We are left with little to entertain ourselves. How can we stand the pain surfacing from our broken hearts?
