Do you see many foreign students studying at Korean universities? Why are there not more foreign students studying in Korean universities?
Korea Has Fewest Foreign Students in OECD
Quote: |
The percentage of foreign students studying in Korean universities is the lowest among member states of the OECD. According to the "OECD Education at a Glance 2007" survey, Korea ranked bottom with Poland at 0.5 percent in 2005, or 15,497 foreign students out of a total 3.2 million of the country's undergraduates and graduates. |

Probably the same reason Korea is not a popular tourist destination. |

I can't speak for everyone, but when I was at the Uni back in the States, most people who were interested in studying abroad were looking at schools in Europe. Obviously the States is a melting pot, but I think there's still a majority who have roots in Europe. People are sometimes more interested in learning about their own cultural heritage than others. There's nothing wrong with that, I think it's only natural that people would prefer to find out about where they come from before they find out where other people come from. Korea's a very small country, so even though there are a lot of Korean-Americans, the majority still are more drawn to France, Germany, the UK, Russia and Eastern Europe, etc. |

Also Korea is not advertised that well. In the UK I've never seen a single tourist commercial, let alone anything about studying there. People can't develop an interest in a country they know nothing about. |

I've met a few Mongolians, Chinese and Indian students here. I went to school here with a number of Japanese and Chinese students...But I'm not in a big city anyway...

Just got back from the UK and I saw plenty of tourism adverts for Korea, on TV, billboards, and buses etc, must be another reason why they are not coming here. |

Check out that list. There's one of your reasons why barely any foreigner students are in Korea, and practically none from the West. |

Never seen any around here. Newspapers, Magazines, TV, Billboards.. Only things I've seen are Korean products (Samsung, Hyundai, KIA, LG etc) - I sometimes surprise people because they think those are Japanese!! I know they exist but the ratio vs other countries promotions is *tiny* |

About 10-15% of my students are foreign, mostly Chinese. I see pockets of other nationalities wandering about campus, but I couldn't give you figures.
It'd be nice to see more of course, but that will come when/if the level of education improves. I'm optimistic in the long run (just my nature), but I don't expect it'll change over night. |
