Hi
I want to plan a trip going to Andong for the Mask festival the weekend after Chuseok. Anyone have any information on how to do that? Meaning what's the best transportation method?
Can we do the festival in one day? How far is it from Seoul?

thanks

I'm planning on going next weekend. Doesn't look like there's a good way to go by train so I'm looking into taking a bus. Since I'm only going one night I haven't decided if I want to bother with booking a hotel or just find a love motel when I arrive.

Hope we don't get another typhoon next week though, or I'm canceling my plans.

Me and the fam are heading down next Wednesday until Sunday. Was there last year and it was a great time. Check the KNTO for details ... they'll have all kinds of info on how to get there, especially if you're coming from Seoul. Be aware that Andong is kind of a small town, and last year it was a bit of hunt to find a reasonable place to stay. If I was single, and on my own, I'd be tempted to stay at a minbak at Hahoe Folk Village. It'd be pretty cool I reckon.

You can get a full schedule of performances from the main grounds. There are troupes from all over the world, and performances happen all day at the main grounds or in the town centre. If you see a whitey with a camera slung around his neck, looking tired with a wife and protesting little one in tow, that'll be me. Wink You might find me in the evening at one of the pork barbecue tents in the main ground, downing soju and gorging myself on tasty pig mmmmm. Here's a few pics from last year.

→ Get off the bus and turn left where the festival place is located (only a 10min. walk).

I'm having a bitch of a time finding info about accommodations. Do you have any specifics about staying in the folk village? Or any info at all on motel or minbaks, or even a sauna?

Check this link. Not for Hahoe, but it's better than nothing I guess. Maybe check the LP, or phone the KNTO number. Best I can do.

I went there (not during the festival) and stayed in the village. It was a great experience and I'd definitely recommend it. You should probably secure your spot early though if it's during festival time because it will be busy. Make sure you find a few friends and enjoy some Andong Jimdalk. Delicious stuff.

My recommendation for Andong is to stay at the Denmark Hotel. Looks like an actual chalet with a small windmill attached to the building. It's situated right on Andong lake right near the Imho Dam. About 50-60,000 won and for the peace and quiet there it's worth it. Just ask your taxi driver to take you there. It's about 20 min. from the terminal on the outside of Andong. Because of the distance you'll have to ask the staff there to call a taxi for any travel around Andong you might do.

While there, there's a water sports ramp at the bottom of the hill. You could get in some skiing or wakeboard. They welcome foreigners and are open from April to October. I've tried it there and loved it. They've got all the equipment you need. Life vests and shorts are available if you just want to swim. Just bring a towel.

Any water sport in Korea is a bit pricey if you rent. They'll give free lessons and a ride around the lake will cost around 30,000 per trip.

This place is better if you're coming by car. Go to http://www.aqski.co.kr/ and click on 'map' for directions. The hotel is right there at the 'X'.

Seconded. Try it together with some Andong soju. That stuff will blow your socks off.
