|
|
So I lost (or hopefully just misplaced) my passport and I really need to send some money home so I can pay my bills. I've already exceeded the $10,000 limit for sending money to the US, so in order to send more, the bank folks want to see my pay slips and passport. I tried to use a photocopy of my passport, but they said NO. Even tried 2 different banks.
Am I screwed or is there another option? Toss a grand into a box of tea and FedEx it? just kidding... or maybe not...
Also, any Americans here ever get a passport replaced? How'd it go? How long did it take? Do they issue a new passport number too? Any advice on this?
Thanks! |

RUN..Do not walk to the embassy and replace that passport.
GET on that bus now to Seoul and replace that passport.
TELL your school, you cannot teach until you replace that passport.
LEAVE that classroom of brats now and replace that passport.
DO not stop and kiss the baby or smell the flowers.
RUN..do not walk to the embassy and replace that passport.
__
You lose your passport and all you care about is transferring funds?

Agreed with the above poster. HOWEVER, if you honestly think that your passport is just lost in the morass of your apartment, I have a question for you. Have you saved the transfer slip from other times you have transferred money? If so, a lot of banks will transfer for you without a passport if you show them another transfer slip (from their bank, of course). And you don't have to fill out the forms all over again. |

Are you serious? I realize losing a passport is a bad thing, but what difference might a few days make? I live near Daegu, so it's a definite trip to go to the embassy in Seoul. I was going to do it after Chuseok. I can't believe that I actually lost it. I have a suspicion that I tried to be clever and hid it in some stupid place in my apartment, then forgot where that clever place was -- altho, I have turned my apt upside-down and inside-out twice now. Or maybe one of the repair guys that have been thru here in the last month had a peak around and swiped it -- but that seems strange. |

Yeah, that's what I usually do and that's what I tried to do today, but it was a no-go. Thanks anyways, tho. |

I'm surprised you need your passport to transfer money. My bank has never asked me. All I need is my arc and payslip. |

Passport replacement:
As I recall, I had to go to the police station and make a statement that it was "lost or stolen." They'll quickly type up a statement in Korean to that effect.
Then go to the embassy, turn that in, fill out the replacement form, maybe pay a fee.
Of course you'll need passport photos, but several places near the embassy make them.
There's a courier option with DHL and they'll deliver it to you once it gets in-country.
I think it was 2-3 weeks.
You will get a new passport number. The replacement is only good for a year, but easy to get extended.
The extension is for 10 years from the new date, not based on your original.
It's confusing, and you'll have to show Immigration officials the extension.. forever. |

Good info! Thank you very much. I'll get on it soon.
newteacher -- As for showing the passport when transferring money, it's only because I'm exceeding the $10,000 mark -- before that, I think they didn't ask. |

Definitely don't mail money. I sent mail to the US from both South Korea and Vietnam and the one from Vietnam finally arrived today and had green tape saying it had been inspected by the Department of Homeland Security. My mail didn't have money or anything really valuable in it, but if it would've, I guess somebody would probably be spending it right now.
Has anyone ever wired money after getting a new passport (new number) and new ARC card (new number)? |

Oops. Incomplete info. They want to see your birth certificate. For me, they accepted a photocopy.
Cool. Just remembered this:

Good Lord! People! Listen!
There is no 'total limit to what you can transfer per year. However, there is a max per transfer. You can only transfer as much as you make. For example, if you make 3mil a month, then you can only transfer 3 mil a month. There IS NO 10,000 LIMIT! Even if the banks tell you this, it is not true!
I have been with KEB for almost 3 years now and have NEVER had a problem. One year, I transferred a little under 30,000 USD and didn't have a problem. Just prove how much you make ONE TIME, make them put it on file, get an employment verification from your job (i.e. a letter stating you work there) and that's it.
Most likely, I figure, it's your bank messing with you.
P.S. - You DON'T need a passport to transfer money. None what-so-ever. |

Thats what you say but you aren't working behind the counter at KEB bank doing wire transfers. As long as THAT person says you need a passport, then I guess you need one. Let me try "Oh yeah, Cubanlord on Dave's ESL said YOU don't need a passport. So, just wire my money." |

lol. Yes, you are right. It depends on the ignorant person behind the counter. I sometimes forget that not everyone has a bank or tellers that know what is going on. |

yeah someone working behind the counter once told me that i couldn't transfer money without my passport so i just got angry and started asking if i have to carry my passport around everytime i want to do anything. Then I said that all the other banks let you transfer money with no passport and threatened to close my account if they didn't do it for me. So they did it for me. |

Yeah, it's seems a bit much that they need to see the passport when they've already seen it before and and they can look at my AR card WHICH I had to have a passport and valid visa to get! I'm going to try some other options and if they don't work, maybe I'll get confrontational.
What about having a friend send the money, like as an international loan, which would be paid back in a short time? Anything wrong with doing that?
BTW, cubanlandlord, I understand about that $10K amount deal. The bank has no problem sending more, it's just that they want the passport and pay slips now because I haven't shown them both of those things at the same time before. |
