"The notorious history of Busan�s Wanweol-dong, which had the largest red light district in Asia during the 1970s and 1980s, was bustling with more than 120 motels housing 2,000 people working in the industry."
Wow, I had no idea that prostitution was so prevalent here that it once had the biggest red light district in all of Asia. Red light districts here don't surprise me in the least, but the biggest in Asia in the 70's-80's?

Would you also be surprised to know that in 2002 the sex industry was worth 4.5% of GDP and has only fallen to 4.1% by 2006?

However, the fact is that prostitution is everywhere in Korea. From the ubiquitous barber pole to the basement coffee shops, prostitution is a higher chunk of the GDP than agriculture. According to a report released by the Korean Institute of Criminology (KIC), the nation's sex trade was estimated at 24 trillion won (US$ 20.4 billion) last year, accounting for 4.1 percent of 578 trillion won, the total GDP.

Well, not anymore. But placed within the context of Asia, that Korea could have once laid claim to the biggest red light district complete, perhaps, with foreign sex tourists surprises me. Absolutely. |

I mean, I pass by Hooker Hill on my way up to the Foreign restaurant and upon passing take a look up see not much more than dimness, desolation, and desertion.
To think that Busan once had the biggest in Asia 25 years ago is a bit of an eye opener. |

I"m curious how they came up with those stats and what they classify as "sex" industry.
Businessmen go to a room salon and blow $2000 without having sex, just drinking whiskey, groping, and singing some songs. Does that count towards the "sex" industry?
The above case is the large chunk of the stuff that goes on in Korea.
Do they count Love Motel revenue as part of the "sex" industry?
The other straight forward stuff is all cash, so i'm wondering how they can get an estimate or handle on it. |

The problems with the prostitution is that it is by and large not a voluntary choice for the women... more typically young girls... involved.
It's categorized as slavery for a reason. |

It's funny because when I goto Korea, they always say how America is so immoral and American girls give it up so easily.
They truly believe that a majority of American and Japanese girls have one night stands freely with anyone.
That kind of attitude doesn't really bother me, but the whole idea that Korean girls are so pure and innocent is really repulsive.

If you think that $2000 at a room salon doesn't get you a BJ and/or sex in the room you are crazy. Then they pay a little extra for the old love motel special. I don't know of one person who goes to the room salon and spends more than $500 who doesn't get a sex related service in return. You are kidding yourself if you think that $2000 only buys some whiskey, groping and singing. A lot more is going on there. I would provide some video links, but I am sure that would get this discussion shut down. If you are curious search the names of room salons in your area and most have videos depicting what the average night in the room salon is like. Very entertaining stuff. If they don't count room salons toward the number they should and it would be a lot higher than 4.1% then. |

| I imagine the stats are very accurate...after all the government personally did careful research. Very careful since there is not one Korean man who doesn't use some service. |

That's not entirely true. In many SE Asian countries where the women work in the tourist sector, most are there voluntarily and work without middle-men. |

To be fair, thats the impression I got too from watching American TV shows and movies
It's always a case of an attractive man/woman are sleeping together/going to sleep together or despise each other and may or may not sleep together
Movies like 40days/40nights and Tv shows like Sex in the city doesnt help either |
