Any teachers here ever brought a Thai g/f into Korea on a tourist visa, married her in Korea and then proceeded to get her a long term visa?
Documents? School support? Costs?
-any advice appreciated.
(no reason to post your horror stories here. I'm a seasoned (enough) vet. w/ Korea living and Thai chix
Thanks |

It's actually fairly straightforward for two foreign nationals to marry in Korea. The catch is that the marriage has to meet the requirements of the laws in Korea, of the laws in the bride's country*, and of the laws in the groom's country. Now that sounds like a lot of doing at first glance, but what it boils down to is getting a document from your embassy certifying that there is no impediment to the marriage, the same sort of document from her embassy certifying that there is no impediment to the marriage.
After you have those two documents in hand, you hie down to the appropriate city hall/citizen's hall to register the marriage. Once that's done, you turn right around and report the marriage to your embassy and to her embassy.
For the actual documents your embassy and the Royal Thai embassy will require, you should contact the consular section of both.
*For example, if the intended bride were a citizen of the Republic of the Philippines instead of Thailand and had married another Philippine citizen in the Philippine and subsequently divorced overseas without either party to the marriage relinquishing Philippine citizenship prior to the divorce, the Philippine government would not recognize the divorce. |

wouldn't it be easier just to marry in Thailand, or do you think marrying here will make it easier for you to get her a visa? I had a friend that was married to a Filipina. They married in the Philippines and he had no problem getting her a visa here. He was a Kiwi. |

Well, first you have to get an affidavit from your consulate that says you are not married anywhere else and are indeed free to marry. Then you have to register your Thai marriage at the local office (Amphur)in Thailand. Then you have to register at the ministry of foreign affairs in Bangers. Then she can change her Thai ID and get a passport in her new name and you'd be good to go. |

I know...don't think it can be done, actually. What the interested parties should do is to contact the Thai consulate here in Korea and ask them, easy enough... |

It must be able to be done.
You can get married in pretty much any country you want.
Doesn't have to be a national. |

^ And did he report back here???
I'm certainly planning to contact the EMB's, but you all know how beurocratic (sp?) BS goes.....better to hear from others that have been through it first...and then the hoop jumping begins.
Thanks Spliff, but a part of me DOES believe it can be done. Soon see, I guess. |

where are you from?
Look on your embassy website.
UK embassy in Seoul has clear instructions for both Koreans and non-koreans |
