I feel your pain.

You can do it now, with or without an ARC. I learned the hard way and suffered unnecessarily for 2 whole weeks.

KT requires only a copy of your passport OR an ARC and I did it myself with an Engrishee speaking operator.

KT phone number for English speakers:
02-520-7800

God speed.

Did you pay for a service? Do you already have wired internet at home? What do you have now? Just a notebook that can do wireless?

If you have internet at home, you also need to purchase a wireless router to transmit the signal through the air to your laptop. I would suggest purchasing the Linksys WRT54G. You can get it for around 70,000 or so, and it'll have English menus. From there, there is a lot more to learn.

Another route you can go is to get wireless internet from a Korean company called Nespot. It is the most affordable solution. You can get a Nespot access point put into your home (I think you rent it) also. I have never had the service, and am not sure what it costs. That allows you to also use Nespot anywhere you can find a Nespot AP.

Ask a Korean friend about it.

ARC = Alien Registration Card. It's the card you get from immigration after you get your Visa and everything settled with your job. It has a special number on it that you use to register for stuff.

You need to purchase cable for your home, and buy a router to transmit the signal, as I mentioned above.

Getting internet to your home is your first step.

You can also take your notebook to different areas around town and search for signals. The typical wifi access point/router transmits maybe 50 meters or so from its base location. Using a signally illegally, though, is technically stealing, but people do it all of the time.

Again, first order of business is getting internet for your home. I happen to get a deal with my Cable TV company. They give me 50 channels plus internet via cable modem for about $32 month.

No, you have to go "sniff" for them by checking around with your notebook.

Try Starbucks. They often have a signal, but some make you pay.

Its probably just easiest to go to a pc bang. it will only cost a few bucks and the chairs are so comfy.

Have any of you guys tried setting up a wireless network in your apt buildings? I was planning on splitting the internet bill with my buddy, but heard that thick concrete walls can block the signal.

If you live next door to someone, and just have one wall between you, you it will work (even through concrete, generally). Some models have more power than others, and can go through more walls.

Your first order of business should be getting your ARC, if you don't have it already. You only have a set amount of time to do it before you invalidate our visa.
