Just curious as to what people on this board think of the party.
What do you think of Dion?
If you've voted for them in the past, why did you vote for them? If you haven't voted for them, why not?
What do you think of the current state of the party? |

I've been out of Canada since 1999. So I haven't voted in a federal election since last millinium. When I left it, Chrtien and Martin were doing a great tag tag of budget surpluses and keeping Canada out of the American 2001 recession. Much to my surprise, the liberals go thrown out of power over some weird kickback scandal. I dunno.
Canada is going to be a very very different political animal when I go back in 2008. Taxes are lower, I hear. |

Very different country. Taxes are 14% in Ontario instead of the normal 15. Actually not much has changed seeing as we're still very much so tied to the hip of the U.S. Just wait until the SPP kicks in.. |

Would we not want to be tied to the hip of the US? Privileged trading status with the world's richest economy? Privileged access by our citizens to that nation? These seem like positives. Tied to the hip then seems like a rather loaded term. |

Good God man, uphold a civil arm's length.
Especially this day & age
Golden global straight-jacket.
Privileged access? Yah, right ... Whose version? (sucker)
Canada's sovereignty (any nation's) must remain among the most sacred values
Speaking of selling out sovereignty status, thanks to the Clinton White House CHINA now holds mf trading nation status with the US of A ( FOREVER !!! ) |

Unless there is something here I don't know about, I can't see how that is anti-semetic.
Back to the main topic. Politically I am a moderate, who has supported the liberal party in the past. I was actually worried when the Conservative party was elected as I though politically this would bring us closer to the bush administration and would also bring us into the economic mess that Bush has in the states too. I was wrong about the economic aspects for sure, Canada's economy is booming and much stronger now than it was under Paul Martin (a former Minister of finance). I realize this has a lot to do wih the price of natural resources, but the fact is right now the conservatives have held true to some of their promises. The conservatives have also really got the ball rolling with regards to settling long standing native issues as well, and that really shocked me considering their historical resistance to dealing with aboriginal issues as a priority domestically. I think our sovereignty is no different under the Conservatives, but our relations with the States are better, our Dollar is at par and our economy is stronger thanm ever.
Dion, (not Celine, lol) is simply not as impressive as past liberal leaders, and has been consistenty out-debated by both Harper, Duceppe, and even Jack Layton. |

Are you capable of making specific claims? You type a lot of words and say exactly nothing. |

I feel the government has very little positive control over the economy and can usually only affect it in the negative. In general I subscribe to the notion that the government's main role is simply staying out of the way.
As a society we set the ground rules for which trade is judged fair. The government plays final arbiter over those rules.
The government can control inflation via the money supply. That's fine.
The government can fund long term infrastructure, like roads/schools/postal, as long as it also allows private enterprise to create their own system. So private universities, private road (well no one really wants to do that), and private mail delivery (fed ex, although they should be able to compete in normal post).
The government can control immigration. I'm all for large numbers of immigrants but a purely open boarder would be a disaster. Letting anyone shop at your store is a great policy but the ability to conduct trade and deliver services has certain real constraints (floor space, say, ability to hire qualified staff to support demand).
The government has to levy the correct amount of taxes to pay for services. Taking too many taxes can cripple the economy. Of course taking too few and degrading services investment finds attractive (courts, police, roads, schools, water) can likewise cripple the economy. |

It will be a great day when the Liberal Pary of Canada has a majority government-and repeal all the tax cuts implemented by the Harper Republicans-that money belongs to the government, not taxpayers. |
