|
|
I am considering becoming an ESL teacher abroad. I've been going over the posts on Dave's and have come away with more questions than answers. Can you folks help me figure out what it is that I don't know, but will need to to gets started?
I'm 27 and will be finishing an associates (2yr) degree in, of all things, Music in May 2008. I want to travel, but need to work. I've decided to set my sights on Korea because everything I read says it's the best place to save money. I plan on pursuing an undergradute degree in Cultural Anthropology next, so I welcome the opportunity to live in a culture very different from my own.
Where do I start!?! |

I neglected to mention that I intend to get my CELTA certification. The British Consulate offers a certification course in Seoul, correct? |

Without a MINIMUM of a Bachelor's Degree you cannot LEGALLY teach in Korea (with or without a CELTA).
NO Bachelors degee = no work visa.
Set your sights on another country or finish your degree. |

Well that's disappointing. Are there countries where I can work with my level of education and a CELTA or TEFL/TESOL certificate? |

Yes, there are several....China, Thailand or perhaps Mexico (I believe), but if your objective is to earn and save money, you will be greatly disappointed by what you will get there.
You are far better off to find work at home, save some money and then finish getting your BA. Then you will be home free. (so to speak) |

A handful of jobs in Shanghai are now offering approaching Korean salaries - you could try there. Just scour the job boards on here. |
