If you are on a E-2 then you need a LOR to get another job. Otherwise you have to wait until your original visa has expired. If your boss agrees to cancel your visa, you will have to leave Korea and come back on a tourist visa and look for work that way.

If you don't tell us, or 'get into the whole story' then it's difficult to give you the best advice possible that you are probably seeking.

Do you want everyone to do a search for the 'again'?

Actually, it's not the whole story. Her hogwon is treating her like shit, they won't give her a health card, they won't tell her her own address so she can get letters and packages and home and they insist that she use the school for everything.

There's more that I won't go into since I'm not Buffy.

STFU Atomic42.

Well no.
She comes here and gripes about everything - her life is horrible and the hogwon is to blame for 911, her lack of health insurance, Mama's little boobies and Daddy's small *beep*, health problems, being lonely, mean Koreans, "help me! solve it all!", no Chuseok gift, Rodney King and the '93 riots...

and you want me to STFU?Laughing
Bring a valid complaint and get it solved.

Go eff yerself and her fluffy poodle.

Atomic, could you please link to the post where Buffy (not you) mentioned a poodle? This is your chance to prove your credibility.

However, if my suspicions are correct, then you knew that your own argument was so weak that you had to introduce the metaphor of a "pink fluffy poodle" just to have any leverage whatsoever.

You are no better than a trashy Western tabloid. (Specifically Western, because we all know that other cultures can do no wrong, don't we?)

Honestly, the best advice I can give you is to go back to the states and ask yourself if teaching in Korea for a year is something you really want to do and why. Then the how will present itself.

If it's because you want to experience the culture, I'd say you've experienced it firsthand already. Part of growing up is being able to deal with bad situations head-on and to stop running every time something doesn't turn out the way you thought it would. In the end, you'll be a stronger and wiser person. Experience is the best teacher (and often the only one people will listen to). Following through on contracts and learning to deal with conflict will also help to improve the image of waeguks here.

Yah Buffy!! Even if you're new here and your boss is treating you like $hit - take it up the bum for The Waeguk Team!

It takes two to tango. I've had jobs with people I hated but we worked through the problems like adults. And if you look at previous threads, she was warned against taking this job, but ignored all that advice because she wanted to be in Seoul so she could "go out."

The reason schools and bosses hold out 300k for three months and have clauses requiring new employees to repay airplane tickets is precisely due to situations like this, where the school pays a ton of money to get the teacher over here (assuming the teacher has done their research) and the teacher then decides to leave the school high and dry.

Chalk it up to employers trying to screw their teachers (and admittedly this does happen) but I think part of the larger problem is that newbies aren't emotionally equipped to deal with conflict in a foreign culture. It's much easier to look elsewhere. If people would actually do their research before taking a job, and be willing to work through problems the proper way instead of running, working conditions would improve.
