What's your thoughts on an 8 year old korean girl playing computer games non-stop after school until she goes to bed, which on weekends is well past 3 am. Meanwhile the divorced father is next to her playing his own computer game and getting pissed in the process. Every single day for the last 4 or 5 months. They don't leave their room.
Is this child abuse?

I inserted the title when I couldn't think of anything else to put. I apologize to all of the Korean parents out there that I offended.
I'm just tired of this lazy ass. The dude is my gf's brother. Owns a business with my gf.
He does absolutely nothing but play computer games all day and get pissed every night. Meanwhile my gf has to be up at 6 am and doesn't get finished until 10pm (with a couple breaks in between). He splits the profit 60-40 which makes no sense to me because he does nothing. My gf won't complain because he's 'family'.
Anyways, I'm complaining here because no one else will listen to me. It's 4 am here and I can still here her playing the same damn game she's been playing for months. They dont' leave the damn room. I'm disgusted by it, but my gf says it's none of my business.

Until you are married, frankly, your gf is right - it IS none of your business.
To answer your OP, though. In the west, it is considered negligent, not quite child abuse... I doubt the authority in Korea will want to get involved but considering the number of cases Korea has had in the past couple years of computer-related deaths, it might not be unwise to call a social worker.. but you won't be able to do this without realising that your gf will break up with you. Tough decision? |

| 6am here now. Father is passed out. Grandmother just walked in on daughter still playing computer games. |

Many Korean parents won't see it that way. The girl is 8 years old: she's old enough to take care of herself (including making her own food). Unless the child is actually injured due to the inattention of the parent, nothing wrong has been committed in many's eyes.
The concept of child neglect is not often thought of here. There's certainly no law against it. I brought in a newspaper clipping of an American couple going to Las Vegas for 8 days, leaving their three kids home alone (8, 6, 5 years old). Very few of my students saw anything wrong with that. "The oldest child can make sandwiches or eat fruit. They can watch TV all day no problem." 
Now, I just use that article as a culture lesson. Even years later, it still gets props from students for being an interesting difference in our thinking. |

My initial thought was 'Wow, they must be American' but then I read the rest of the thread. I imagine that's a worldwide thing now. It's a nasty byproduct of a society entrenched in multimedia technology.
That little girl will be just fine. |

People who go to Las Vegas and leave their kids at home  (should be a felony) and people who sit on the pokies all day in South Auckland blowing their weekly food money  need a good kick up the arse at the very least.
In this case the man feels that the women can do all the work. He needs a kick up the arse about that and he needs guidance at being a more involved father. |

I haven't used it in more than a year. If I still have it, it would be boxed up in Seoul.
I imagine if you googled child abandonment you'd get a few results of similar stories. |
