Thsi thread is a hoot. Some witty and entertaining posts; none of which (of course) emanate from the delightful jinju.

It is funny. Steve-O made a surprise appearance in G.D. forum knockin Korean tourism ads (looks like it got pulled now) and Jinju thought to bait'em into a forum-fight. Instead ChopChaeJoe an' pastis are going at it. I think it's hilarious.

Me? I can't stand Eskimos! I had a medic who was one (can't remember the tribe). He was our medic in Bosnia and he was afraid of the sight of blood. Can ya believe it? He was Eastern Orthodox and believed in possession. I told'em if I die 'cause he was afraid to treat me then I would come back and haunt him the rest of his life! He believed me!
At least that's ONE benefit of global warming! They're all washed up anywho.

Man am I bored. I'm going back to watch'n X-Files...

Feigning ignorance as a last resort. You're dumber than I thought.

If calling a whole country "rotten scoundrels" without even giving a reason is your idea of an opinion, then keep it to your ignorant ass self. I'm just calling you out on your bs (but then you already knew that).

i think we're going to have to agree to disagree. Good luck getting through Jr. High and all.

I wasn't really trying to change your mind. I just wanted to refute your slander against a country that I like. I did that, so go ahead and wallow in your ignorance for the rest of your life for all I care.

That's what I'd like to know. I didn't see any harm in it. That "racial tensions" thread is more controversial. MODs must not be too happy with him.

Ooh! This is a special X-File! Some guy's infected with something and Mulder has to catch some infected fugitive while the Scully is in some lab, finds out she isn't infected by some parasite and allows a stink bug to walk on her arm to find a cure! The tension!

Thanks, i'll do that. But I'm not sure how you refuted me. You condemned me, to be sure, but I never got the sense of an argument. You're like one of those burley sumo wrestlers who feel the need to shove a woman just because they happened to set foot on what you believe to be sacred space.

You can't "debate" stupidity, and that's literally all you've shown.

1) I don't care much about sumo.
2) According to your article she wasn't shoved. Rather, she did the shoving and invaded the ring right as a match was about to start.

I'm not sure how you could possibly come off as any dumber, but I'm sure you'll show me...

jinju,

I don't particularly care for China either. And I should know - I live here in China. There are so many reasons to be discontented ... the heavy-handed repressive government, the censorship, the oily food, the mistreatment of workers on the part of Chinese bosses - the list goes on.

Still, the people are, on the most part, lovely and kind. They keep me going. I teach at an international school. The students are great. The management is not. They keep me thinking that it may be time to leave. Perhaps to return to Korea, who knows?

Still, China is a rough road. I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet. But I AM thinking about it ...

This thread is silly.

I mean really, can you generalize about such a huge country as China? Every city and province is different. During my short trips there, I was always treated with politeness. Maybe I was just lucky. I am sure it could have gone the other way too. It just depends who you meet up with.

Or maybe you are just nice and polite. Sometimes people get exactly what they dish out themselves. I have seen people who were incredibly rude and talked down to the locals get angry when the locals started being rude...

I admit, I hate china.

lets dissect China. Plug your noses!

1. Chinese writing. Some consider this worth studying. It isnt. Its about the most backwards writing system ever devised. It must have been devised by children too as most of it are basically rudimentary hieroglyphics. The worst thing about it is that its totally useless in the modern world. Try applying it to electronics, genetics. Its useless.

2. Chinese food is about the most disgusting crap Ive ever had to eat. And I didnt even touch any of the truly disgusting things. But perhaps Chinese eating habits can give us a clue as to why China produces garbage that kills consumers in other countries. Garbage in, garbage out. Would YOU eat spiders and c*ckroaches? The Chinese do.

3. Why cant the Chinese produce something that doesnt posion or kill consumers? have they failed to grasp this simple concept? Consumer goods shouldnt be lethal.

4. Chinese people. Just about the rudest, most unrefined bunch of country bumpkins in the world. I wouldnt trust one with anything of mine, it would probably be stolen.

Your OP seems to be about surface things you hate about China, which is fine if you stop there. But your title seems to suggest that there is not one redeemining quality you can mention about a country of over a billion people, and that is not fine.

However, I am less interested in chastising you, and more interested in why you feel the way you do about China. Certainly, there are things we would change about every country if we had the chance, but do those things make the whole country and its people rotten?

I lived and taught in China for a year (in Guiyang, southern China). My now ex-wife and I lived in that city of nearly 3 million, and were the only foreign residents as far as I knew - with the exception of a missionary couple a city away.

It was in China that I (1) came out as being gay [my ex-wife knew before our marriage], (2) decided to divorce, (3) was deathly ill for 2 weeks, throwing up black slime about every three hours, and (4) nearly committed suicide. Upon reflection, though, I am thankful for my time in China. The remember the kindness of so many Chinese people. I remember the helpfulness of many government officials. Yes, there were and are) problems, but the country itself and many of the people are fascinating, gentle, and kind.

Elaborate on your experience leading to your conclusion. I am truly curious. And please forgive me if you have already answered this question. I have not read past the OP yet.

Blessings,
Daniel[/i]

I have a love/hate relationship with humans. Some are really cool, but even those ones have a tendency to be irritating. All of them rape the earth and blame other countries and people for doing the same, but they sure as hell aren't going out of their way to live in grass huts or caves and subside off of vegetables, roots, and tree bark.

China sucks, but at least they have a one child policy. The government wants to be strong, but they're like, "Stop fuc#ing!" Every country on this earth should follow suit immediately so all the rich bastards on their high horses who can afford hybrid cars but still ride on jets and cruise ships (half of which are likely Made in China) can stop soothsaying about global disaster (which will just transform the earth anyway, not destroy it). A worldwide NO child policy for about 2 generations would get rid of a lot of headaches and clear the air a little bit (litarally!)

Huo guo and mal-la tang are excellent too...Yum!

Chinese traditional medicine is certainly bollox and appallingly cruel to moon bears. That kind of torture makes the Japanese dolphin torturers and Korean dog torturers look mild in comparison. Cruel races. Their reputation for brutality is well-founded.

The Chinese one-child policy is also an abomination. Many baby girls are simply aborted and abandoned. What right does the state have in preventing a person who wants two children from doing so? It's also incredibly stupid, given China will have a huge elderly population. Mind you, we don't expect great intelligence from a country with 20% of the world's population and only the second biggest economy. It only took over the UK (1,300 million Chinese vs 60 million Brits) in 2005.

None of this would be so bad if it weren't for the fact that we're always told how more evolved (body hair), intelligent (higher IQs, chopsticks) Asians are.

See the protests in Hong Kong over the 1997 British handover of HK to the Chinese. I wonder why! Democracy, rule of law, civil liberties.

1.
I studied in China for three years. Chinese is a beautiful language. It can be so expressive in so many different ways. The written language is deeply meaningful if you have any artist sense.

2.
Chinese food is wonderful. Such variety. Such different cooking styles and methods. You can order the same dish all over China and it will come recognizable with local variety and style.

3.
Guess you will never shop at a Walmart, Dollar Tree, or any number of stores in the US. Guess you don't like Chinese tea either. What a shame.

4.
Chinese people are what you see. They can be the most honest, kind, and unassuming people in the world. I known and eaten with Chinese Government officials, Policemen, Soldiers, College students, and others.

Once I departed Tianjin in a two person berth on a train. Across from me was a uniformed member of the Chinese security bureau. Not exactly, what one would have as a travelling companion for a two day trip.

But after a while, we introduced ourselves. I discovered his hometown was near a University I taught at in Southern China. I said good things about my experience there. I believed I had been through his hometown as well on some trip.

Well that did it.

The next train stop, he went out and purchase a whole cooked chicken and plenty of rice wine. He basically wined and dined me that day and next til we exited the train in Hubei Province.
