Korean Drunk Driving Deaths on Rise
Quote: |
Alcohol-related traffic deaths on South Korean roads are on a steady increase due to a lack of police efforts to reduce drunk driving, a parliamentary report said Sunday....
Last year, casualties from driving under the influence of alcohol totaled 29,990, compared with 26,460 in 2005 and 25,150 in 2005. |

Is a casualty considered a death in those statistics or a death and/or injury? |

Hmmm....
And yet, after 14 years or so here, I see more drunk driving checkpoints than ever before. Strange. Wish they'd check the taxi drivers though...I've been in a few cabs that reeked of soju.
Anyone remember the days before Korean cops had breathalizers? The drivers had to breathe into a paper cup, then the cop would sniff it to see if he could detect alcohol. Funny stuff.

*raises hand*
However, IIRC, it was a cop who did the sniffing. The cup didn't sniff itself.

You'd rather the fact that this country holds many records for being foremost amongst OECD nations when it comes to lack of safety on the roads? What next, don't dare debate Dokdo or the existence of gays in the Corea? |

Worries the living beep out of me that when I take a taxi home from the supermarket on a Friday night there is often a huge wiff of soju in the car. |

I think it is very important that the culture of pressuring Korean workers to drink at work functions should be put to an end as it endangers the lives of many Koreans, keeps Korean men away from their homes doing something not related to work at all. I think that is part of the problem.
There is so much pressure to drink in Korea. A friend of mine was pressured by someone to drink soju. He doesn't like soju, and he was bigger than the Korean who was trying to pressure him and simply refused. I don't mind soju once in a while, but the point is there is way too much peer pressure that Koreans face to drink. That would reduce the death toll, I think. Any of us could get killed because of that insanity, Korean or non-Korean.
Happy Chuseok everyone and I hope you are all safe... and connected with important people in your lives... |

Not interested in a debate jags because that is very rare in here...in fact you have a better chance of finding gold in your toilet than of finding a real, objective or even well argued debate in here....sorry buddy. |

Homer, are you providing any "balance" here? Or do you resent the fact that RR has raised the issue of drunk driving at all?
But of course, people being killed by drunk driving cannot possibly compare with the scandal of foreign teachers spending their taxi money on meals. |

I think you are clouding the issue somewhat. I respect many of your opinions on Korea and think you provide balance where there is little, but this is one area that Korea lags behind the rest of the world. I really do feel that it needs addressing and ignoring it or trying to rationalise it just makes matters worse. Hope you are having a good Chuseok with the family, BTW. |
