While it's nice to find yourself sitting on a gold mine, I don't think it is a sign of virtue or merit.

Yes, actually. Both Norway and Nigeria sit on a gold mine of oil. No? One can go the way of Norway or one can go the way of Nigeria.

Canada is unlikely to be a Nigeria. Nobody's worried about Canada, it seems particularly blessed these days. I mean if only Norway could profit from global warming in the ways Canada already has!

Thats the comment of a dolt.

Yes Canada is on a gold mine and that has helped turn us into a petrodollar powerhouse.

But......

Long before the price spike in commodities prices Canada (starting in 1993) put her books in order.

The federal government has a huge budget surplus (and has one since 94/95) and every province and territory this year has a balanced budget or a surplus.

I take no issue with Canadian politics per se. Like America, Canadian society features pros and cons.

Agree. Arguing Canada VS the USA is akin to the four blind men arguing over the nature of an elephant. Depends what you're touching upon. Having lived under both systems, I wouldn't mind if Canada adopt more American ways. American political and economic freedoms with Canada's "no one gives a rat's ass about your religious cred". I like Canada's public healthcare but I would sure like if people with money could pay to a private system.

There is much to admire in Canada. My only issue is with Canada's peculiar, flag-bearing, chest-thumping nationalism and its near pathological need to define itself by the despised American Other. In a word: Canadian-style antiAmericanism.

Again, I agree here too. Too many Canadians need to define themselves in terms of "we're not like America in these ways". Drive me up the wall as much as you. I really hate the reflexive "Americans are all stupid, know nothing about what's going on in the world" attitude. Even if that were true, then it's true because Americans DON'T have to know about the rest of the world. America is the big show. If you're born in Belgium and you want to reach out for the brass ring, you need to know something about the rest of the world. You need to learn many languages, learn geography, and cultures
