|
|
Hey guys, after seeing a few good computer hardware sites located in Korea listed on here, I decided to start looking around and putting together some computer parts.
Based off of advice I've received here, I've put together a system (missing a few parts, IE: Fan (couldn't find one on the Korean sites).
Anyway, I couldn't find an intel motherboard that could hold a quad processor (on the korean sites at least), so I went with a Nvidia one. Of course I haven't bought this yet, but if anyone wants to take a look and give me some feedback that would be great!
Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600 = 249,000
OCZ DDR2 2G PC2-6400 Platinum Revision2 (1Gx2) = 74,000
Seagate SATA2 500G (7200.10/16M) ST3500630AS = 115,000
LG DVD-Multi GSA-H62N = 32,000
EVERTOP 지포스 8800GTS 비너스 320MB = 290,000
nVIDIA nForce 650i ULTRA = 108,000
LG상사 Wixx LGC-4000L 블랙 = 30,000
Total = 898,000
A couple things that concern me. I only saw 2 USB ports on the case I selected. I went with LG due to considering the brand to be quite high quality however.
I am really tempted to go with 4gigs of ram. However, there has been mention that it will make 0% difference with WinXp. If I thought it would even make a small difference, I'd go with it to avoid bothering to upgrade later when I go with VISTA some day in the future.
I thought 512mb was fairly standard now with video cards. I am going to be on a 19inch LG LCD monitor though, so I was told it really wouldn't matter. The price difference is quite large to go from the 320 to something higher, though if anyone recommends it due to a large performance boost I'll consider it.
Anyway, pick away at it. I'm going for a fairly decent gaming system here. I plan on playing BF2142 and other quite new games. I'm sure it will be able to handle everything out right now fairly well.
Thanks for all the help so far everyone, keep it coming!

Unless you are working with true multi-threaded applications (not just dual threaded) or are planning to run server side as well as player side multi-player games you will see NO improvement by using the Q6600.
You would be better off with something like the E6850 running at 3GHz and 1333MHz front side bus.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core_2
Single or dual-threaded applications alone, including many games, do not benefit from the second pair of cores of a quad-core CPU over an equally clocked dual-core CPU. For example, the quad-core Extreme QX6700 (Kentsfield) did not process those applications faster than the older dual-core Extreme X6800 (Conroe XE core), because its FSB's speed was the same, and it was clocked slightly slower. Nevertheless, a simultaneous running of several processor-intensive single/dual-threaded applications on the quad-core CPU is generally much faster than on equally clocked dual-core CPU. The quad-core CPU is useful also to run both the client and server processes of a game without noticeable lag in either thread, as each instance (up to four) could be running on a different core. Furthermore, multi-threaded games (see Crysis and Gears of War) benefit from the quad-core CPUs[27], because - as Cervat Yerli of Crytek said - four cores will make for better frame rates and gameplay as audio, physics and AI as well as other things are all offloaded to separate cores.
As to hardware, I run a Q6600 and I am quite happy with the Gigabyte GA-P35-S3 mainboard with 4 gigs of RAM.
You are partly correct in your assumption about extra RAM and winXP. Unless you are using the 64bit version (which is not really XP) or the 64 bit version of Vista you will NOT see any benefit from the extra RAM because the 32 bit systems ignore it.

Wouldn't I be safe to assume that quad-core CPU's will become more and more useful as time goes on? Compatibility with games will certainly improve and utilize the extra power of extra cores in the future won't they?
Thanks for the advice though. What OS do you use out of interest, given that you have 4gigs of ram?

What would be the best RAM (2g) to run with this processor? It runs at 1333MHz. |

I would personally go with the XFX 8800GTS 320. They have dang good warranties and after service if needed. All around, one of the 2 best companies for vid cards.
On the Seagate drive, make sure that's the one with NCQ (Native Command Queuing) which makes the drive faster. I think the one you want has an "N" at the end of the model number.
Am I missing the power supply? Case? For that system, you really want a good power supply, probably at least 500w.
I've helped a couple people order cases and they've all had chosen the UREX 유렉스 IW C-583. It's a pretty nice case. Nowhere near the best, but easy to use and has good airflow.

Think the 8800GTS is a great card? According to the benchmarks I see, it's quite high end.
Should I go with a 8800GTX for quite a bit more money? Or is it overkill and not really needed?
As for the N on the end of the hard-drive model, I don't seem to see any that match your description I'll take your advice on the case though, I really had no idea what to go with there
As for a power supply, how about the GreatWall GW-500BL priced at 57,000? I really don't know about differences between power supplies, so I basically just picked that one which was mid-range priced yet still reasonable, and made special mention of being SLI compatible with Nvidia cards.

Ok, back to square one on the power supply....
Any suggestions anyone? Something not toooooo noisy but ideally not over 75,000won.
Thanks so far everyone. How do my overall specs look aside from the power supply than? I want to purchase this thing in the next week or so.

I wouldn't go up to the 8800GTX, that's overkill for most people and I don't think that there are many games that would need it yet. When Crysis comes out, that'll need it I'm sure!
As for PSUs, check out the Asus Atlas A-45GA. It's running about 72.000 for a 450 watt supply.
You don't really need to worry about one that is SLI-ready since you're only gonna have one card. Just make sure that any PSU you do buy has a 6-pin PCI-E connector and enough SATA and other connectors for what you will need.

Is 450w enough? I'd really love to go with ASUS but everyone seems to recommend at least 500w =(
Anyway, if anyone can recommend a nice 500w PSU under 90,000won I would appreciate it If not, I guess I'll have to cough up the extra cash.
If I were to spend more money, I'd probably look at the OCZ GameXStream 600W for 115,000won. Seems like I shouldn't spend that kinda cash on a powersupply though.... Anyway, I'll wait here for more info from you folks

I can't recommend one but just remember without power you have bought an extremely expensive box. |

If you're happy to spend 1mill on the entire PC then 100,000 on the PSU would be proportionate.
I'm planning to use a Hiper 580w PSU for my next build. Around 98,000 in Yongsan. Groovy modular build. So you only have to use the cables you need.

Great, thanks again for the advice. I read some reviews, and decided to go with the OCZ Power Supply.
The only thing left for me to get is a cooling system for my box. If you guys could recommend something I'd greatly appreciate it. You've all been very helpful so far.
Current setup I'm aiming for is:
Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600 = 249,000
2x OCZ DDR2 2G PC2-6400 Platinum Revision2 (1Gx2) = 74,000 x2 = 148,000
Seagate SATA2 500G (7200.10/16M) ST3500630AS = 115,000
LG DVD-Multi GSA-H62N = 32,000
XFX 지포스 8800GTS TripleX 320MB = 331,000
nVIDIA nForce 650i ULTRA = 108,000
유렉스 이글루 IW-C583 블랙 (HS리더기) (Case) = 36,000
OCZ GameXStream 600W = 115,000
Total = 1,134,000

Are you getting the 64-bit OS? If not, then why 4GB of RAM? Also, which OS are you going to get? If you're building a brand new system, don't use a hacked copy, best to spend the money on a legit OS if you're gonna be using it every day.
If you're not planning to do any overclocking, stock cooling on the CPU should be enough. Just make sure the CPU you buy is the 정품 which is retail with fan instead of the OEM which is normally a few thousand cheaper.
