I got the most wonderful Chusok present this year. I woke up on Chusok morning to drive to the celebration and my car tire was knifed. Police were summoned; investigations were made. Mine was the only car targeted on that street (in a small town). Fortunately, we had a spare and our insurance got us towed to the nearest open mechanic (a minor miracle, that). The police kindly informed us that any insurance will most likely not take care of acts of vandalism. That's nice to know.

So basically, if you wake up one day and your car has been completely gutted because your skin is a different color (let's not play dumb here, folks), consider yourself SOL.

No such thing as hate crimes in Korea.

Have a nice day.

That sucks dude.

Don't know if I'd put it up there with hate crimes like a black guy or a homosexual getting beat to death or anything. But still, I've had a tire slashed before and it's not a good feeling to walk out in the morning and see that.

You sure it wasn't just random?

This whole country is covered in CCTV cameras, following everyone's every move. Any chance it was caught on camera?
Bugger dude, look at the bright side, it was the tire on the receiving end of the knife.
As to this being a hate crime, unfortunately you can't be certain 100%.

Do you have a bumper sticker that says, "I'm not Korean?"

The future would have been that very same night if that punk (punks?) had tried to pull the same stunt. I was looking out the second story window every five minutes just waiting for the chance to grind some noses into the pavement.

Don't need one when you're the only non-Korean in the joint.

Blacker than a patch of midnight that's never been cleared away. Just like me.

By the way, the irony of this situation has not been lost on me.

Yes, indeed, Mack the Knife has been knifed.

I win.

This is why I avoid small towns in Korea like the plague. I don't care how 'scenic' the place is, the most unfriendly and nastiest, backwards Koreans that I have encountered have been in the small towns in Korea.

I've had my motorbikes vandalized because I'm white. Pretty clear, when they use terrible English to write in permanent market all over my gas tank. Several times, actually. . .

It especially sucks because I try to lead a very quiet, unobtrusive life. I can't have stepped on many toes. I just happen to have the wrong color skin.
