I think most of you missed the point. My point is, there's a psychological aspect here making your identity less individualistic., ie., unable to express yourself, not able to talk to just anyone, very little social interaction to make you feel a part of anything, and less freedom of choice, and this in more ways than one.

It has nothing to do about what you can do here in Korea, which is quite easy to accomplish, in a limited sense. But accomplishing what you want to do by your own merit, such as achieving a recognizable social status, instead of just being a guest in Korea, is non-existent.

The mindset is far too diferent from that in America, and I'd think, in some of your own countries alike. This mindset is that who you are doesn't have much bearing on your personality, or your daily decisions in life, because you're just there, not a part of anything.

So to stand out, to go your own way, is like following a one way street that really leads to nowhere.

Korea isn't a collectivist society.
There's no dissolving of the "self" into some great indistinguishable whole.

Dude, if you want to eat well and exercise, just do it. You must have known before coming here that you would be a spectacle. If you aren't coping, it probably doesn't have anything to do with Korean culture and how it does or does not compare to American culture. It's probably got to do with you just not coping.

Don't boggle your brains trying to pick apart what's wrong with this country (and there's LOTS). If you're depressed, find a way to take some positive action and sort yourself out.
