And I suppose all of your CDs, DVDs, and games are legit copies as well? In the realm of education, we do what we can, which means "stealing" clipart, printing others' lesson plans, pasting text from websites, and, yes, sometimes using software that will ensure our students will get the best lesson possible. If we had to write for permission everytime we wanted to make a photocopy or use an image, our students would suffer--not the corporate giants that produce these things.

Actually, yes, they are. I purchase my CDs, DVDs, and games from the actual manufacturers or authorized dealers. I do get a pretty good, and legitimate, two-fold discount on them because I can purchase them on the bases here (owing to my retired military status) and thus don't have to pay international shipping and customs taxes for items purchased on the base nor on items I order from the US and mailed (up to a certain weight) to my US military address.

I don't see why you'd have to write for permission every time. Why not just purchase the thing legitimately if you want the proprietary stuff (such as MS Word) and pay for the shipping and taxes? Or, as suggested by more than one person in this thread, get a legitimate freeware equivalent?

I certainly have my fair share of pirated stuff. The only issue I would have with using a pirated version of Word or any MS product is they're an easy target for hackers inserting nasty viruses.

If your school is cheap like mine, you might need to install service pack 2 .

I noticed my school hasn't SP2, but huge korean anti-spy/virus software which takes forever to run.

Are there any legitimate reasons (paranoia apart) why you wouldn't want to have SP2?

EDIT; BTW, I uninstalled the dodgy copy of ms office pro, and I'm liking some of the functions in openoffice. Creating your resume as a pdf and playing about with pictures actually seems easier than ms, although I never had much ms training.

All I know is that XP SP 1 is much older than the latest version. That's what happens with pirated software though. The updates are turned off and then the OS becomes...outdated.

Also, for resumes I format it in word and save it as a .pdf using acrobat Pro, but that is a selling point of OpenOffice.

Just a heads up for anyone who uses a mac. Open Ofiiice is now availible for mac as is the pre-existing Neo Office. I have both and they are both decent software suites. They run considerably faster on Macs than Ms Office 2004 does and just a notch slower than the new iWork 08 software. For most basic uses the Neo and Open office suites are very good.
