Not that bad.
I wouldn't have even given him a penalty. |

I don't think it was that dirty. If McCammond didnt' get hurt, the penalty wouldn't have been as bad. Say are there places to watch playoff hockey in Seoul? (don't laugh at me ) |

I grew up next to a kid named Steve Downie. Royal bastard. Couldn't be him tough, he'd be in his early thirties. |

And the hammer comes down...
NHL suspends Flyers' Downie for 20 games
By DAN GELSTON, AP Sports Writer
PHILADELPHIA - Flyers rookie Steve Downie was suspended 20 games by the NHL on Friday for his hit on Ottawa's Dean McAmmond that gave the center a concussion.
McAmmond was taken off the ice on a stretcher in the second period of Tuesday's preseason game. Downie received a match penalty and was automatically suspended until Friday's hearing.
Downie has not played an NHL game with the Flyers and was expected to start the season in the minor leagues. The 20-year-old said after the game he thought it was a clean hit.
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said on Thursday that Downie was remorseful.
"He's a good young man. He's a good hockey player," Holmgren said. "Part of what makes him a good player is his aggressiveness and his willingness to fight for things.
"The incident in Ottawa the other day, he was doing what he normally would do there. He was going to finish his check and, well, it really was an ugly incident because of the nature of the injury."

The angle I saw showed that the offical closest to the hit made no call.
Downie had his elbows in, led with the shoulder (some angles look like he led with his hip), and it's hard to tell whether he left his feet or not (he certainly did AFTER impact). Charging? Yes (though he did let up before the hit, too). 20 games...I thinbk he was punished for public opinion, not the hit.
Compare the Downie hit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=322zqTkL0-c to this one - (Wendell Clark on Bruce Bell - considered on of the GREAT and CLEAN hits in NHL history): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGRheKlGbq0
The bigger problem is that the NHL has avoided addressing hits to the head. If it was clear that Downie had not left his feet, that would've been a 'techically' clean hit.
The NHL has to do something about this (international hockey already has). It seems that the NHL is more interested in making sure that 'phantom' hooks are called that addressing this issue.
Hit to the head: 2 mins
Hit to the head with elbow: 5 mins
Leaving feet for a flying hit to the head: 5 and a game, review by league
In this case, Downie wasn't even expected to play with the big club this year. If you really want to make a statement, make his club play with their roster short one man for the duration of his suspension as well.
I remember yeasrs ago watching the world juniors, Olympics or world championships and getting frustrated by the officiating. I would think 'Why can't they just call this like an NHL game?' Now I prefer the international game (world juniors for the last ten couple of years, the recent super series)...I watch international hockey and think 'I wish the NHL were like this.' |

The NHL has basically committed suicide in the US. Its popularity and significance is well behind the big 3 and Nascar and golf, and maybe even tennis. The only time it makes the news is when one player tries to injure another (Downie, Chris Simon, Bertuzzi, Domi, Marchmant, Neil, etc.).
I found the hit dirty for a few reasons. He left his feet to hit a player who didn't have the puck. He targetted the guy's head (with his shoulder or arm, I can't tell), meaning he was clearly trying to injure him. It was in the preseason, and the goon thought the best way to make the NHL roster is by taking somebody out.
I understand people get hurt all the time in hockey, and that checking and fighting are part of the game. But the brutality we've seen the past few years from people like Chris Simon and Steve Downie has made the NHL even more of a joke in the US than it was now, and has worked to kill its international appeal anywhere outside of Canada. Players who commit thuggish behavior ought to be punished. |

I also agree with what you said about the lack of consistency. Here are videos of five hits from last season that didn't earn any sort of disciplinary action. I thought the Armstrong-Eaves hit was pretty clean, but it was a dangerous play nonetheless. A couple of hits were downright dirty, and should've gotten the guys suspended for half a season, IMO.

Not 100% all Downie's fault though. Coach always taught me "keep your head up". McAmmond's head was down and didn't see it coming. Tough luck. |

20 f#$%ing games for THAT?!
2 minutes for charging, in my books (if that)... if he hadn't have left his feet, it would have been 100% clean...
the real rule is: keep your head up, even in preseason! i can't believe the NHL is bowing to the court of public opinion... what a farce
hits to the head do NOT require a new penalty! if a guy's got his head down and you hit his head with your shoulder (and your feet are on the ice) it's NOT a penalty! an elbow is an elbow, no matter where you hit the guy... |

As an aside, did anyone listen to Downie's post-game interview? It was a little like listening to John Rambo give a speech on foreign policy....
Regarding the Wendell Clark video - I thought he had his elbow up and, if you watch closely in slo-mo, it looks to me like he kind of did leave his feet but just got stopped by Bell's body...
A couple of other interesting things I saw is how slowly the goaltender (is that Kelly Hrudy?) initially comes over to cover the near-side post, and the lack of advertising on those beautiful white boards - when exactly was that game? |
