What would folks count as "Modern drummers"?

Within the last 20 years?

I would think modern, in this context, would be post-disco, say 1983-present. That would unfotunately include most of Huey Lewis, but unfortunately exclude most of the Clash.

I wouldn't say he's "classic rock" but he sure plays a lot of it:

Abe Laboriel Jr.

(drummer for Paul McCartney)

right up there with Joe English in my book!

(and I saw the Joe English Group in concert back in the '80s)

How do you guys rate drummers? What are your criteria?

I go by drum rolls, use of cymbals, and the bass drum.

Very few people would disagree that Gene Hoglan is not the best metal drummer ever; the guy is fat but just amazing - listen to this old thrash band, Dark Angel - in 1986, 3 bands released classic thrash metal albums - Dark Angel (Darkness Descends), Kreator (Pleasure To Kill), and Slayer (Reign In Blood).
