The university that published the chart is Shanghai Jiao Tong University, who themselves are ranked 234.
**the poll options look that way because some universities have the same rank. In that case, if two universities are, say, both #30, the next rank is 32. |

| Who cares? The really good schools have all started pulling out of these stupid rankings recently (at least in Canada and America), and I know more will follow. They are practically useless if you really check them out. |

That's a very weird list.
Unless something terrible has happend to Durham and LSE in the UK recently......they are ranked 16th-23rd!!
My Uni, Queens, Belfast, is in the 200th-300th band worldwide. It was top 5 in the UK a few years before I went there. Not that I care about ranking because I know my degree was bloody hard work and nobody in my faculty (English) got even a pass easily. Never mind the highest grade. Only two 'firsts' were given the year I went there. From around 250 English majors.
Anyway, I'm sure there is a better list out there. I always thought the two big factors were tutor/student ratio and funds spent on research. |

Mine is well within the top 50, but I won't specify (don't want to give away my location!). That's no surprise because it has a very high ranking on other lists.
I still think it is a load of crap. I took two subjects at a 'lesser' uni across town (because those subjects weren't offered at mine) and it was much much better - got much more out of it. But my mum and dad could brag to their friends and colleagues that I had gone to a good one. Actually, I reckon one of the very best unis in the world is the British Open University. I would do all my study with that institution if I could. |

#16 - not bad...
I don't think that list is very good though, it's too typically Anglo-American biased (ex. I doubt many French would agree with the Sorbonne being ranked as low as 39th and 52nd, while Cambridge and Oxford are both in the top 10).
It also seems to have left out or substantially under-ranked many top tier private unis (ex. Keio University in Tokyo - usually considered the best in Japan after Tokyo U. and Kyoto U. - is very prestigious with lots of Prime Ministers etc. as alumni). |

The only three non-U.S. universities in the top 20 are Cambridge, Oxford, and Tokyo University. |

Me? I have no idea since I've only attended one, which is in the US.

Not just you. I just threw the question out.
Could, what was it? 8 of the top 10 Uni's be in the US? I agree it's possible. I'm not being bewildered here because I think Americans are stupid. Far from it. I thin it's possible. But I'm asking why? Do American Uni's have a methodology or approach which earns excellence? |

What's so strange about that?
Chicago has had 79 Nobel Prize winners affiliated with the school. Oxford has had 56. It's not the best measure of a school, but it indicates that Chicago deserves to be near the top.
