Talk to a Mac owner and chances are they will tell you that a Mac is superior to a PC because PCs crash a lot and Macs never crash. I can't tell you how often I have heard this, hence option No. 1.

As I mentioned in another thread, I used professional Macs at work and they crashed. The older Macs seemed to crash because the graphics work sometimes overloaded the memory. The newer Macs seemed to crash because of incompatibility with, believe it or not, some text files I had to import daily from a website. But at both jobs, the boss kept insisting that Macs don't crash.

So, OK, Macs don't crash. Macs don't crash. Macs don't crash.

Whatever.

But is it true that PCs crash?

Yes, they certainly used to. One problem apparently was incompatible actions by programs, another incompatible stuff in files? I'm not an IT pro, so I am not sure.

There tend to be problems with new releases of Windows until bugs are worked out in the OS and in third-party programs. I have noticed occasional problems with Vista, but not lately.

There are also several different brands of Web browsers, and some people have antique versions still in use. This could cause problems accessing some websites. There are Korean shopping websites that seem to lock up my computer. I have to go ctrl alt del to get into the task manager to shut the browser down manually because it gets the CPU running at 100 percent. I don't consider this an OS failure, but rather bizarre web design. Heck, even that Naver site that is the homepage at work tries to make it as difficult as possible for you to switch to another website.

You know, if you have a laptop, a crash can be a headache, and you may have to pull the battery out, as well as the power cord, to get the laptop to do a cold restart.

Have you had to do this?

If you have had a problem with crashes, are you using a legit copy of Windows? Do you go to the Microsoft website and update Windows at least once a month? Do you check for updates to Office, too?

Are you using antivirus and anti spyware software?

Frankly, if you don't use any of this, and you are connected to the Web, I would be surprised if your computer would keep working more than one week.

So, yes, PCs can get infected. But then if you go to Thailand and have unprotected promiscuous sex, how long will it be before you get infected? IN the real world, we are expected to use common sense and act responsibly. Computers are part of the real world.

I use a PC running Windows XP and I can't remember the last time it crashed. In fact, it's never crashed in the 10 months I've used it and it's on 24/7... Also, I didn't pay a cent for it....

For some reason I had trouble getting the 10th poll option to display.

When I tried to edit, the edit option didn't show for the poll. So I just deleted.

It looks like you have to click on a "one more" option and leave it blank to get the last poll option on the screen.

It's nice to wait a bit to give the OP a chance to check a poll for edits before answering the poll.

And, FYI, you are only allowed 10 poll options.

where's the I use a mac and it crashes option? I have a freind with a mac that crashes at least once a month so that option is necessary.

I use a mac and I get freezes - usually from looking at poorly-ripped porn torrents.

It's only when using one particular view format in finder - if it can't figure out how to preview the video when you're in the column view it will freeze finder - and then you have a bonafide problem.

Otherwise, it takes some pretty remarkable work/stupidity to force a freeze.

Apple's marketing is pure genius. They convince the average Joe that Macs don't crash, they don't ever break, and they perform better than PC's.

i use both and my window's computer running xp crashes more often. I think that has much to do with the fact that i'm running a pirated copy that has been modified. My mac has froze just once.

And why does Korea have cars with such funny horns?

It's like they have horns with a built in echo chamber or something.

they hit the horn, even in the parking lot, and there is lilke this reverb that just faaaaades away.

I have a Power PC Mac Mini that I've used since 2005 and this here Intel iBook that I've had since January and have never had a crash on either of them. Well, that's not entirely true, I did have a couple of freezes on the laptop. When I transferred my files from the Mini over to this one there were a couple of programs that were incompatible with the Intel chip and I had to delete them before it ran smooth. Since then, no problems. My girlfriend has been using a Mac Powerbook since 2004 and, that I know of, it's never crashed.

When I was using my old orange iMac, bought in '99 and running 9.2, I'd crash maybe once or twice a month.

I used both Linux and Windows so the poll is pretty much useless :

- Linux crashed on me while trying to rule GMC encoded videos and unfamiliar media formats, but usually its quite smooth and easy to shut down stalling applications (after giving it a 1GB memory swap space partition).

- XP has never crashed, ever. It does hang on memory intensive applications (when I have only 16mb of hard disk space), but its easy to shut them down.
