Academics rallied to Nalini Ghumans cause after her residency visa was revoked last year.
By NINA BERNSTEIN
Published: September 17, 2007
Nalini Ghuman, an up-and-coming musicologist and expert on the British composer Edward Elgar, was stopped at the San Francisco airport in August last year and, without explanation, told that she was no longer allowed to enter the United States.

Go to City Room Her case has become a cause clbre among musicologists and the subject of a protest campaign by the American Musicological Society and by academic leaders like Leon Botstein, the president of Bard College at Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y., where Ms. Ghuman was to have participated last month in the Bard Music Festival, showcasing Elgars music.
But the door has remained closed to Ms. Ghuman, an assistant professor at Mills College in Oakland, Calif., who is British and who had lived, studied and worked in this country for 10 years before her abrupt exclusion.

She is of Sikh heritage, nothing to do with Muslims and Arabs, so you wonder what's going on? Maybe, she has dark skin and looks like what someone thinks should be banned? No clue. I put a good link afterwards. Thanks Ally. |

That's horrid.
I guess if she married that fiancee, she wouldn't be allowed in.
What a bunch of horse shit!
You can't come into America.
Why?
We can't tell you.
How in the hell can you prove your innocence in that sort of situation????? |

She is a British citizen who was raised in Wales, her father is Indian, but not even Muslim. It doesn't make sense. The government needs to provide an explanation or rectify this matter ASAP. Her fiance is waiting for her. She has also lived in the US for a decade from what I understand. |

It would be nice for the US to provide an explanation but they don't need to. |

The word need is a tricky word to use. If the US Government bans too many scholars including scientists, then they can simply go to England and Canada and the U.S. would suffer a certain loss that is really unnecessary. This woman is not a threat. She teaches music, is not a Muslim, was born in the United Kingdom. I think she is entitled to an explanation, and I think most Americans who don't like this think she is probably, because it seems kind of crazy that she is not allowed in... |

Sounds more like she is the victim of immigration bureaucracy more than
an intended target of the administration. The new immigration policies
call for more enforcement. It could be she tried to enter before her Visa
was approved. I mean from what I am reading it sounds like the times
article is alluding to a Visa that was revoked, or expired because it also
eludes to a Visa application still in process. How long had she been on
her leave? Had she a multiple entry Visa? Was she attempting to enter
as a tourist with the intention to work?
It's easy to see a conspiracy here when it looks like the press is not
giving all the information, like when did she leave the US? Was her
departure from the US documented in her passport?
The articles I read simple have not enough information from the "victim"
to state a valid case in her defense. The government can't give any
information as that would constitute a violation of the individuals privacy.
I think the press and the victim are not releasing enough information to
make any case of persecution here.
So the questions would be:
WHEN was the Visa revoked or expired?
HOW long had the person been out of the country?
WHAT type of Visa had she held prior to leaving the USA?
WHO sponsored the original Visa?
Where had she been during her absence?
I know we have an innocent until proven guilty response waiting in the
wings, all fine and good, but wouldn't the same principle apply to the
government that stands accused in this case. |

True, but since this woman has been living in the U.S. for 10 years and has been going back and forth, it wouldn't make sense that the mistake would be on her part, so I would side with her on this one. I think it is, as you said, like someone's spam filter being too strong and not letting vital e-mails go through, so to speak. It doens't mean the government is being evil, but it is being incompetent, it appears and innocent people are being punished. This should be rectified, but the government has limited funds due to the war in Iraq. I am sure there are so many important departments screaming for cash and so people stay on lists they shouldn't be on. |
