Is there any great advantage to having an E1 visa verses an E2 visa... or is it just status ?

It MAY be issued or extended for up to 2 years at a time instead of 1. E2s can only be issued or extended for 1 year at a time.

It can entail more than just teaching English. A visiting professor can teach any subject he is qualified to teach or engage in research at the Uni without needing a change in status of sojourn or an addition to permitted activities.

There are other small differences but those 2 are the big ones.

Can you teach a subject (other than English) in English at a university on an E-2 visa?

Not legally.

E-2 Status (Teaching Foreign Languages)
A. The Object of Visa Issuance

The E-2 visa is available to individuals who have the qualifications specified by the Minister of justice and desire to instruct foreign languages at foreign language institutions, educational institutions of elementary school and higher levels or their attached language research institutions, or language training institutions attached to public/private companies or broadcasting stations, or other institutions/organizations corresponding to such institutions as described above.

E-1 Status (Professors)

A. The Object of Visa Issuance

This category applies to foreigners who, as qualified individuals specified by the Educational Law, wish to instruct special fields of study or engage in the guidance of research at junior colleges or higher educational institutions, or the institutions corresponding to such levels.

* In the case of a national or a public University, a foreigner is not permitted to be a full-time professor.

E1 means you're a real professor hired to do real professor things (research/teach/publish). E2 means you're hired to teach english, be it hagwon, public school, or at the university level.

i was on an E1 when i first came here (1999). i don't know about now because some things have changed in the labor laws. in addition to what was already said, E1's could get credit cards easily at any bank and E1's could be members of the union.

i taught English poetry to grad students for 2 years in addition to teaching conversation. there are days i miss that job. officially i was an Associate Professor.

Maybe they were lenient at the immigration office, but my current E2 was a 16 month extension.
