I had to travel this morning so i walked to the subway station and approached the counter to recharge my transit card....but no one was there, so Iwalked over to those machines that spit out the little tickets. I've never used one before but I'm sure I could've figured it out.
Anyway, before I could throw my money in the machine, a guy comes up and presses a button that says "complimentary ticket" and it spits out a ticket.
I figured, "can't hurt", so I pressed the magic button and another ticket shot out.
The only English on the whole machine was "Complimentary ticket" so i figure it's only for us waygooks. God Bless Korea!
In hindsight, I'm sure it's for the elderly or disabled. But hey, the ONLY english says Complimentary Ticket. Next time my GF is with me I'll find out what the hangul says.
Anyone know off the top of their head? Anyone seen these things before? |

Yes, I saw those and wondered why there would be free tickets. It didn't quite make sense to me either. If there really were free complimentary tickets, don't you think a whole lot of people would use them?
Did you try one? If so, did it work and let you exit the subway?
I think next time, I will try one, but also buy a ticket just in case I get caught empty handed. |

Oh I forgot tot add, yes I tried it and yes it got me all the way to Seoul and let me exit. No problems. |

Only those who can read and understand Korean would know so. The ENGLISH signs say nothing of the kind. If I were a tourist, I'd take one just based on the sign alone. |

Here's a thought:
Get a big red button.
Stick it on the wall by the entrance to the subway.
Rig it up to a doohicky that lights up a message saying "Do not press this button!" when pressed.
Watch the results. |

| They are for old people (60, 65, whatever, old) and they change the color of the lights in the turnstile. If you get caught using one, it's a fine. |

Actually I appreciate his point. While long term residents will understand, tourists simply won't make the connection. Another example, where some massive organization could have taken all of 15 minutes to consult with a whitey, cough up $25, and just get the right English. |
