What do they mean by "dodging" the swear filter anyway? I thought you could only be guilty of that if you used formatting to trick the filter into allowing a "bad" word to go through as is, instead of beeping it out. What about using asterisks in place of certain letters? What if you misspell the word intentionally, so the C-word becomes the K-word? What if you really do dodge the swear filter when writing about part of a woman's body, in the context of a normal discussion about feeding a baby? Or when writing about a certain kind of insect whose name ends with "roach"?

B*E*E*P!!!! (censored, of course)

Treefarmer, I'd quote your post accurately and say "same to you," but the mods would probably punish me.

Maybe they will anyway? Am I allowed to say "B*E*E*P" on this site?

Simply refute it, or ignore the thread.

Well, there used to be a very anti-Semitic poster who went by the name "Migook." His posts were way over the line by any standard, and it took the mods forever to do anything about him. There was also a guy who denied the Holocaust a few times ... same story. I don't think their posts had anything to do with legitimate controversies involving politics ... they were just here to spew s*it, and their posts had little or no redeeming value. I think those are the kinds of posters we need to see less of, people who are taking up too much bandwidth and giving the site a bad reputation.

Someone denying the existance of the holocaust in an on-line forum is called free speech. It's ok. Their words let the rest of us know to ignore them. Really. OP, is this your first bulletin board experience? Flame-wars, trolling, it's all ok. It's part of a thriving on line community. Do you advocate government censorship of music, tv, movies and video games?

Get a life.

Trolls, the mentally retarded, racists, Korean nationalists, mysoginists, pornagraphers, dirty old men, dirty women, atheists, christian crazies, serious teachers, apologists and all the other little factions are what make Dave's interesting.

If I wanted a nice cup of tea and genteel conversation, I would go someplace else.

It is an internet message board people; it is not life! Don't take it so seriously!

Another thing I like about this site is when push comes to shove and someone has a real question or a real problem, people put down their wepons and help the person out. Now, that is true class!

I'm strongly in favor of regular posters being mods. The mods we have don't appear to read the board and take an active interest in it. I can't be a mod because I've been in trouble in the past and I couldn't be trusted with power anyway. For a start, I'd simply kill off troll accounts - just immediately ban them, no trial, no jury, straight to execution - and secondly, if someone whupped my ass in a debate, I'd probably delete the whole thing! And ban them! Mr. Green Nobody wants a genocidal dictator in charge.

I thought mods couldn't ban on their own...they had to ask Dave to do that...wasn't there a post by a mod saying something like that?

Dave's not listening. Thats the problem.

The few boards I've been a part of that are of quality have an active ownership and a clear purpose. Dave's is hamstrung on both fronts.

Yeah, that was true during my tenure as an unpaid volunteer ... Dave usually does the deed when they ask, though, and pretty quickly.

What amuses me in this thread is that some of the same people asking for increased moderation against insults and bigoted hated speech are the VERY same ones who have been and continue to be guilty of the same in the past - but, of course, when THEY do it, it's okay, Because THEY are right and others are wrong.

When you ask for increased moderation, most of the time you are asking that someone censor ideas and opinions you'd rather not hear. Just my opinion.

Comparing Dave's to Wikipedia is silly.

So is the notion in the OP that the forums are unmoderated.

Yes, I remember when someone decided they were going to clean up the CE forum. It was terrible.

What I also remember is back when Dave's was unmoderated and the whole world was on a single forum. It was terrible.

People who call for more moderation should be banned.

Well, there's obviously more to your relationship with the mods than meets the eye, isn't there? I see they took down my (very mild and very well-deserved) insult in the other thread ... yet they seem to have no problem with your lies, your inane rants, your endless personal attacks, your lame "jokes," or that lovely bit of vulgarity I was actually responding to.

I wonder if the mods still know how to spell TOS? They certainly don't seem interested in enforcing them.

Someone denying the existance of the holocaust in an on-line forum is called free speech. It's ok. e.

Actually it's called HATE speech and is illegal in quite a few places. It is most definitely NOT ok. There are standards by which any civilized society off or online functions and to have people like that violates the standards. It is sad that any person who is a reasonable sane and balanced individual would feel Holocaust denying is "ok". People like that are sick...and to tolerate them encourages the sickness and encourages them to spread the word and find more like-minded posters.

It certainly has no place on a teacher's online forum. PARTICULARLY one that is mined for quotes to incite the K-netizens against us. That would be the final nail in the coffin.

The idea that you can say everything and anything as a form of free speech is silly. It doesn't work that way in the real world (try joking with airport officials that you have a bomb in your luggage) and it doesn't work that way here. If someone were to start making death threats to the other posters here, how long do you think he'd last before being banned?

We do have restrictions and should. People who are or were of Jewish origin should feel as safe and as welcome on this site as anybody else. Someone who CONTINUALLY denies the Holocaust, continually supports other published Holocaust deniers and continually launches attacks against Zionists doesn't contribute anything to the site anyway...so no great loss.

I hate the swear filter. Notice we can't use any English swears but Korean swears. It's like one big 때씹 on the English language.
