Please don't lambaste the noob here. I did the highly recommended Search thing and read all that I can about working at CDI but every single post is about being an instructor for them. I'd like to know if there is anyone currently working for them as an e-Tutor or used to be one who can share their experience with that job marking essays all day long in front of a computer. I'll be doing some training with them later this month and won't be able to see the contract to sign till then which seems odd since I accepted the job offer and have already given my current employer notice to leave. The base salary is pretty decent at 3 million Won/month with the chance to make more with overtime and quarterly bonuses based on work performance. The job also lets you work a couple of days from home too but no national holidays off. Just curious to find out opinions about this particular position and/or if details of the contract for an e-Tutor can be shared (looking through 55 pages in the Contract Posting Thread is a little daunting). Thanks! |

You're entitled to observe ALL Korean National Holidays by law. So, in my humble opinion, it would be worth it to negotiate that into your contract.

Thanks but that's not the right job posting. I applied for a higher level position called a "WM e-Tutor" (marking intermediate level essays) and that job isn't advertised on CDI's English site. Naturally, I had asked about not having national holidays off (only off for 1 day each during Chuseok and Solnal (new years)) and was given an uplifting and positive explanation that it's CDI's dedication to education, promise to parents, etc to not even close on holidays (I have read others here state that they have taught on holidays) and so that extends to e-Tutors as well even though they never see any students. So I'm not sure how I can negotiate myself out of that one. Set start and end work times as well as the opportunity to make some extra cash working OT and to telecommute 2 days out of the week are big enough incentives to cancel out the holiday work. Although I'd probably think otherwise when I'm hunkered down typing away on Christmas day.
And I am an F-2 btw. Here is the posting:

I would take the job if;
-I got Korean National Holidays (you're entitled to observed ALL Korean National Holidays)
-10 days of paid annual leave (you're entitled to it by labor law)
-30,000 Korean Won per overtime hour
-Single housing included in contract

I've known people who done it. You won't get to work at home at first, it'll take a few months. The work is really easy as long as you stay on top of it. There is a big social scene, least was when my friend worked there six months ago, although mainly older kyopos. But I've known three people that worked there and only one lasted a year. Not that it was a drag but more just wasn't what they wanted to do. |
