I have no dog in this fight, because I don't follow FOX NEWS enough to have an opinion on it, at least not one that I'd be prepared to defend publically. But since FOX's "fair and balanced" claims have been the subject of some lively debate on Dave's, I thought the following might be of interest.

Quote:
Norvell is London bureau chief for Fox News, and on May 20 he let the mask slip in, of all places, the Wall Street Journal. So far, the damage has been contained, because Norvell's comments—in an op-ed he wrote decrying left-wing bias at the BBC—appeared only in the Journal's European edition. But Chatterbox's agents are everywhere.

Here is what Norvell fessed up to in the May 20 Wall Street Journal Europe:

Even we at Fox News manage to get some lefties on the air occasionally, and often let them finish their sentences before we club them to death and feed the scraps to Karl Rove and Bill O'Reilly. And those who hate us can take solace in the fact that they aren't subsidizing Bill's bombast; we payers of the BBC license fee don't enjoy that peace of mind.

Fox News is, after all, a private channel and our presenters are quite open about where they stand on particular stories. That's our appeal. People watch us because they know what they are getting. The Beeb's institutionalized leftism would be easier to tolerate if the corporation was a little more honest about it.

The BBC provide a global news through a number of media. What Fox news types would call institutionalized leftism, others would call balanced. Nomatter what the BBC did it would be subject to criticism, from both left and right.

I am however, curious to know, if others believe as I do, that a completely privatised media tends to be much more biased towards the right than the left?

I never begrudged my license fee for this very reason.

Fox News is for the most part alternative news. I have always looked at it as an editorial - not just news. Its views are no more right wing than the comentary section of the Guardian is left wing. Fox ought to just put commentary over 75% of their reporting and then there would be no problem. That is the only real criticism they deserve.

Found this on Yahoo and thought it was good for a laugh, especially the part I highlighted.

Fox News' Radio Service Expands By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer
Wed Jun 1,11:07 AM ET

NEW YORK - With a newly constructed Manhattan studio and expanded news offerings, the fledgling Fox News Radio is marking a key step in its growth plans.

The service started two years ago and has offered one-minute newscasts to affiliate stations. On Wednesday morning, Fox News is announcing that it's offering the longer newscasts that many talk-oriented stations demand.

"It's important if we're in this business that we're in it in the visible ways that the old-line guys are in it," said Kevin Magee, senior vice president of Fox News Radio.

Fox's earlier agreement with Clear Channel, the nation's largest radio ownership group, will take effect this summer and, by August, the news service's outlets will reach about 500 nationwide, Magee said. There are more than 10,000 commercial radio stations in the country.

Many talk stations spend hours criticizing major media outlets as liberal, then turn to market leaders ABC and CBS for newscasts at the top of the hour, he said. Fox will offer a newscast with many of the same personalities and tone as seen on Fox News Channel, he said. Laurie Dhue was scheduled to anchor the first five-minute newscast.

"It's not opinionated," he said. "It's straight news, but it's news fair and balanced, where we believe both sides should get a fair hearing."

The Clear Channel deal and Magee's appointment earlier this year — he was a top executive at Fox News Channel — are important steps in helping Fox News Radio reach critical mass, said Tom Taylor, editor of the trade publication Inside Radio, which is owned by Clear Channel.

Fox News Radio, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., currently presents talk shows with Tony Snow and Alan Colmes. Magee said he expects to expand that lineup, but offered no details. Fox News Radio recently hired 30 people to put its radio expansion plans in effect.

If Fox would admit it was biased and quit the act they wouldn't be open to that particular line of criticism. The real issue with them is the same one that plaques nearly all American media--the dominance of the shouting-head format, in which truth is nearly always secondary (at best) to the scoring of points.

Interesting that the same conservatives constantly harping about the "coarsening of the culture" rarely have any problem with the really quite shocking rudeness with which Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, etc. treat guests who disagree with them.

You report ... we choose the photos ...

AP Protests Fox After Photographer Ban
Wed Jul 12, 3:56 PM ET

NEW YORK - The Associated Press is protesting plans by Fox to bar photographers from its news conferences at the Television Critics Association press tour and says it will not cover the events unless the network changes the policy.

Fox has asked journalists to accept handout photos from photographers it has hired. The news cooperative says Fox's decision interferes with its ability to fully report the event and sets a bad precedent.

Television networks bring executives and stars to a Los Angeles-area conference center twice a year to meet with journalists from across the country.

Unless Fox allows it to send photographers, the AP will not assign any print journalists to cover Fox's events, which include those by the affiliated FX cable network.

"Fox wants to make sure the images from their publicity event are flattering to the network by controlling the content and distribution of the pictures," said David Ake, the AP's deputy director of photography.

"The problem for the AP is that, just as we wouldn't let Fox write our stories, we can't have them shooting our pictures."

Ake said several discussions with Fox have resulted in no progress, but that the AP still hopes to resolve the issue. Recent Fox press tour events were covered with no problem, he said.

Fox spokesman Scott Grogin declined to comment Wednesday on the AP's protest. Another Fox spokesman, Joe Earley, told Variety he would not give the reasons for Fox's decision, but labeled it unfortunate the AP has "reacted in such an aggressive and detrimental manner."

I've seen the Fox news interview guy ( don't know the name ) actually shouting "Shut up!" at an interviewee. I mean, this is not serious journalism, this is not impartial, this is not professional, this in not news, this is propaganda plain and simple...

I didn't really like "Outfoxed", I thought it could have been a lot better. But the O'Reilly interview with Jeremy Glick never ceases to be shocking.

Actually, they should be criticized for calling it news. Itisn't. Editorializing is not news, it's editorials. It's also essentially propaganda. Pretty direct propaganda, too.

I get the luxury of FoxNews when I'm on vacation in Thailand, and the above is the truest assessment.

What's interesting: I watched the Iraq invasion in 2003 primarily on ChannelNewsAsia out of Singapore. The reporting was pretty good. May Ying Welsh was an unembedded reporter in Baghdad. She wasn't holding anything back in her commentary. Further research revealed that ChannelNewsAsia is owned by Mediacorp, Murdoch's conglomerate. It was shocking how different the same outfit could be: In Singapore, unembedded reporter call it how she sees it while, in America, commentators denounce Peter Arnett as a traitor.

to the OP.
Yes. That is a funny statement. And it screams volumes that a BUREAU chief would be foolish enough to say that: To where their prejudice on their sleeve like that.

Now if only they could convince fox to put a disclaimer over their programs in London...that would seem like a good balance.

The news stopped being the news when Conkrite was king.
There isn't a news story today that doesn't have an editorial component to it.
Unbiased no longer exists.
The individual is responsible for filtering his news source.

Igotthisguitar has this strange habit of resurrecting threads that go back more than a year.

Does he have an encyclopedic memory and pulls these things up whenever something new appears that he associates with something someone here discussed a year ago?

Does he spend hours and hours pouring through old threads, looking for any opportunity to bring them back up?

What up?
