... There are standards by which any civilized society off or online functions and to have people like that violates the standards. It is sad that any person who is a reasonable sane and balanced individual would feel Holocaust denying is "ok". People like that are sick...and to tolerate them encourages the sickness and encourages them to spread the word and find more like-minded posters.
It certainly has no place on a teacher's online forum. PARTICULARLY one that is mined for quotes to incite the K-netizens against us. That would be the final nail in the coffin.
The idea that you can say everything and anything as a form of free speech is silly. It doesn't work that way in the real world (try joking with airport officials that you have a bomb in your luggage) and it doesn't work that way here. If someone were to start making death threats to the other posters here, how long do you think he'd last before being banned?
We do have restrictions and should. People who are or were of Jewish origin should feel as safe and as welcome on this site as anybody else. Someone who CONTINUALLY denies the Holocaust, continually supports other published Holocaust deniers and continually launches attacks against Zionists doesn't contribute anything to the site anyway...so no great loss. |
Good points. Also, this is a privately owned site. Dave Sperling has the right to decide what belongs here and what doesn't ... so it's not a case of the government depriving poor oppressed citizens of their "freedom of speech."
It's a mystery to me why the mods don't welcome these kinds of discussions and actively participate in them in a good-faith effort to make the forums a better place. Really, I wonder if Dave is listening ... or if he cares at all what goes on here. |

canuckistan having to repeat herself for those who don't seem to really be listening:
We have our benchmarks of what's unacceptable (porn, un-worksafe pics, blatant trolling by bored/drunk individuals) but with the rest of "heated discussions" we try to strike a balance; however since everybody's "it's-over-the-line" is in a different place, we can't possibly make everyone happy 100% of the time.
"Too much moderating!!"
"Too little moderating!!"
Hitting the post report button helps us find a better average. (Suggestion #1)
I'm also going to say the obvious: it's unfortunate that adults even need moderating.
How about everyone practicing a little self-sensorship--thinking twice before you hit the "submit" button in a froth of anger or whatever it is driving the escalating insults.(Suggestion #2) |

And we're all saying that those benchmarks need to be reexamined. Is there really a need to censor Dick Cheney's names, or prohibit the discussion of cock roaches, yet allow members to register with names like keseki or use Korean swears like 씨발놈? |

Swear filter complaints: email Dave. Mods don't set its parameters. However, none of us have control over the English language's more ribald uses and the software isn't sophisticated enough to distinguish intent: Poor Dick Cheney with his house filled with cock roaches.
Questionable usernames: if we seem to have missed it, hit the post report button and let us know--amongst the multitudes of new usernames registered each week that would really be grand. |

I really have no interest in ratting out people based on their usernames. I'm just saying if Korean swears are acceptable, the far milder English swears should be as well. If I had any expectation that he would read my message, I would e-mail Dave right away. In fact, I think I did several months ago. |

| I guess he figures that if he filtered out Korean profanity, he'd have to filter out profanity in all the other languages too ... |

Just a thought, but in order to block the words in Korean, they'd have to be entered into the block list in Hangul, and Dave is probably unable to.
Maybe if you sent him a list of the Korean swears, written in Hangul and Romanized form he would take action? It would just be a matter of copy and paste then.

But there are so many non-standard ways of Romanizing Korean words ... if someone really wants to say something offensive in Korean, I'm sure they'll find a way to say it. |

| I'd say fark English swears, just censor the Korean ones. If you're offended by English profanity that's your own problem. |

So someone swears in English. We don't care, and Korean lurkers don't care. Someone says 씨발놈, it's pitchforks and torches. |

You forgot the socks, the poor spellers, the deceitful dweebs with 200-plus online identities ... and, I don't know, who else? |
