if something like this happened in basketball....the media would be going ape about voilence in basketball and how the league is all thugs (see Pistons Pacers at Auburn Hills, or Nuggets Knicks at MSG)....

but since hockey is a bunch of whitebreads...stuff like this, Bertuzzi, Chris Simon, Marty McSorely and Tie Domi is all about hard nosed old time hockey and the good old boys....

it shows how racialist the media is

are you seriously comparing bench clearing brawls to a hard foul?! when was the last time a flagrant foul in basketball merited a 20-game suspension? i can't even remember the last time i saw a bench clearing brawl in the NHL...

i wonder what would have happened if the hitter had been a star player like iginla or thornton - the NHL definitely wouldn't have reacted like they did...

no, i'm comparting a hard foul...followed by pushing and shoving, with punches after (in the case of Auburn Hills some fans were involved, in the case of Madison Square Garden 1 punch was thrown)

but i guess thats much worse to hockey where Chris Simon and Marty McSorely use their sticks as a weapon on a guy's face, or when Tie Domi sprays water on fans and taunts them and then proceeds to fight a fan who fell into the penalty box, or Todd Bertuzzi ruining a guy's career with a cheap shot from behind....and also how fighting is considered "part of the game" by most

but it's basketball that is painted as a "sport of thugs"

i completely agree that sticks to the head are unacceptable... i believe those guys were charged with criminal offences and received lengthy suspensions... the tie domi incident was more comical than dangerous, IMO... the fan threw garbage at domi, domi threw water at the fan, and the fat a$$ fell into the penalty box! domi did NOT fight the poor slob!

what is so wrong about fighting being a part of the game? it seems much less dangerous to have 2 tough guys square off than have a mass melee of baseball or basketballers flailing wildy at each other (not to mention the safety of the fans nearby)! if 2 grown men want to beat each other up, what's the problem?

i'm not saying that hockey isn't a thug sport - rather that basketball and baseball aren't any better! at least hockey players fight like men instead of dogs...

i'm from Peterborough and watched Downie play there for a year....well actually he was suspended it seemed more than he played...
He would jump the boards for a fight, abuse the ref, run goalies, among other things....
The hit on McCammond wasn't totally illegal but like the hockey brass says; there has to be respect in the game, otherwise you would see 5 or 6 hits like this each night...
I just think Downie is a few sandwiches short of a picnic and didn't think again what he was doing until after.....it'll be interesting to see how his career plays out because he extremely aggressive (somesitmes stupidly so) but let's not forget he is an incredible hockey player, i just hope he grows up

So many errors I don't know where to begin.

First, hockey is a fringe sport in the US. Hence, little to no media attention over these hits. Go North and you'll find nearly every sports station, newspaper etc going ape over them. Similarly, the NBA crap isn't huge in Canadian news.

Second. Fighting/hitting has been in hockey since it began. And, anyone who knows anything about hockey will tell you that fighting is almost always left on the ice and doesn't appear in personal lives. Contrast that to the NBA where these guys getting in sraps are living the "gangsta" lifestyle (some of them) and well, you can see why the league wants to halt it.

Third, as someone pointed out, Domi did NOT actually fight the fan. He just stood back and laughed at him. All the other guys you mentioned: big suspensions.

Fourth, yes, media is racialized. Bringing it up here just reeks of desperation and makes your claim a joke. Stick to real examples and people will give you more sympathy.

Let me guess your favorite newspaper is the Toronto Sun and Don Cherry is your hero.

I'm sure thats why fighting in the NBA is blown out of proportion, because they are afraid these guys "living the "gangsta" lifestyle" as you put it, are going to cap each other in drive-bys after the game

"punches were being exhanged between a flyer fan and domi"
your right he stood back and laughed at him....watch the video

Not at all. They're worried about their young white fans emulating them

Did you see Domi throw any punches? I see the drunk fan swigning his arms and a little bit of domi pushing him down. If you had more video, you'd see Domi standing back and laughing as the refs came in. But hey, keep living your life on the internet. Actually experiencing things is over-rated.

You're talking out your arse. Hence, the examples are lame.

ok my bad...i understand that the camera angle was not perfect on that one...and i guess you thought the play by play guys saying "punches were exchanged between a flyers fan and domi" was a lie

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcgivAeVlI4&mode=related&search=

now, watch this video, be careful you might have to watch it twice....and i guess its possible that the footage was altered and someone superimposed or used CGI to make it look like domi pulls the guy's shirt as he is falling, and throws at least two punches which can be seen between the 8 and 10 second mark, and again at 40-42 seconds

That looks better. Poor Domi, having to defend himself like that. I hope that fan got into some serious crap. (Actually, I hate Domi) Seriously though, can't blame the player for that one. All drunken fan.

As an aside, sorry for any name calling today. I'm in a super-ass-pissy mood.
