| It was nice to discover today that the ticket machines are finally accepting the new 1000 won notes....a mere six months after they were released. |

| dont be suprised if some day soon those freebies are gone, seoul metro and seoul mrt corp have been complaing that these free tickets are going to cost them some serious money as the population ages and more people use them. means they have to raise fares for the rest of us to keep the trains running at a break even point |
hogwonguy1979, I'm still trying to get deported for using that ticket. Since it was your suggestion I be deported, do you think you could help me? So far, I went to the police station but they were closed. I tried to explain to the transit authority what I did, but they just shrugged. Tomorrow I am going to the district office with my GF and see if she can get me deported. I really really really feel bad about the whole matter. I mean, shi8ut, I don't want you to pay more for your subway ride in ten years when the boomers hit 65. Every post of yours is compounding my guilt. Jesus, I wish I never got that golden ticket. Please God, erase this mistake from my past!

| mmm first time I saw that I thought " mmm free ticket, must be for the very old and maybe very young". Either I'm exceptionally bright or your a handy capable person. In that case you're probably eligible for the ticket. Enjoy! |

lol, no no no, I too knew it was for the elderly yet I still pressed the button. Hence my hurry to get deported. I want to be punished for my crime.

Worse, the 5,000 won note has been out for two years. You would think in those two years they'd get ready. Hell, even before installing a bunch of expensive machines you think they'd ring up the BoK and ask what they're future plans were for the currency.
Planning: Korea it won't kill you. |

Simple solution. Buy a ticket and throw it away. Tear it up really well so it can't be used. Then your 1000 won mistake will be erased.
Deportation? Maybe send that dickhead to North Korea. That's the only deportation I would like to see.

They allowed my (non-Korean) friend to take one. She didn't use the machine, just went up to the ticket guy and asked for it. He gave it to her. She is an "older" lady, though technically not retired. |
Technically it is meant for only Koreans. I remember a newspaper article about that. |
Technically, yes, but if the ticket attendant is willing to give them to us, too... |

If you want to see exactly who it's for, go to the Itaewon subway station pay window. There is a notice in English all about it. It's for Koreans who are 60 or 65+ (can't remember which) and foreigners in that age bracket ONLY if they are "honorary citizens of South Korea."
So, unless you're Gus Hiddink, and old enough, you're SOL.
In a nutshell, that's what it says. |

Yeah there was something of a stink about it a few months back. Many universities in Canada give retired people free tuition, although they might not extend that benefit to people on temporary visas or tourist visas. Is it like that? Or is it like a transit system that gives old people a discount fare.
A free subway ticket seems a small thing, however. At the same time, it sure seems like one of the few universal government give aways to retired people. Crap, they just built modern Korea literally on their backs.
So, I dunno. |
