Yep, racism exists pretty much everywhere.
It just so happens that these boards tend to focus on the Korean examples seeing as a) we live here, b) we're the victims.
Not much of a surprise there.
My only wish is that people stop using racism as a stick to beat Korea while ignoring elsewhere. You can't argue in a vacuum.
It's as pointless as saying New Zealand is a utopia because it has air with 20% oxygen and thus sustains human life. |

I did my BA at Royal Holloway which is part of the University of London. The main campus is in the burbs out near Heathrow airport. It has one of the most spectacular university buildings in the world but it is surrounded by shit council estates. Quite a breeding ground for resentment. Even North Americans will actually be familiar with this area because of Ali G.
Check out this story about a Korean student which made the Guardian!!

| Quote: |
| A Korean female postgraduate exchange student was attacked by three youths - one man and two women - inside a college laundry room at the main campus in November, 2004. They verbally abused her and hit her continuously for half an hour, till she fell on the floor. Then they started kicking her. She was left with bad injuries and bruises all over her face. |
from the same article
| Quote: |
| Two months later, on January 28, a Chinese-German student was attacked by 10 youths at the south gate, outside the college grounds. On the same night, an Indian student was attacked. |
In fairness though I should say that the Chavs dont just hate asians, they really just hate people with an education. That is why another student was attacked with an axe in a nearby graveyard.

| England's a funny little bugger, ain't it. Just watch the BBC, you can go for an hour and not see a reporter of Anglo heritage. Many are of Sub-Continental origin. BK was right that institutionally it's one of the least racist places there is. That aside, the first 12 months of my four years there were spent in rural Leicestershire and Somerset, about as white as they come there. I've heard things that would make your hair curl said about Pakistanis, Romany and Turks in general conversation, then again I am from Queensland. Moving to London was the best thing I ever did, worked in the City and have never been exposed to a more colorful bunch (pardon the pun). Far from utopia it is, just go down to Bermondsey or Millwall for your bit of vitriol, but the network of friends I maintain to this day from that time, transcends class, sexuality and racial boundaries like no other. |

Idiots.
One thing I'll say for Korea: even though they probably have a much higher number of racists/idiots/xynophobes per capita than Canada, you rarely hear of them getting violent with whitey. |
What makes you so sure that Koreans are more "racists/idiots/xynophobes per capita than Canada"?
Lets be honest here. Americans and Canadians are trained from an early age how to "behave" around people of different backgrounds and when to apply "PC" approriately. But are they really less racists/idiots/xynophobes than Koreans? |

| Everybody is racist on some level. It's built right into our tribal mentality. Different male tribe = competition for women/potential danger to the food supply and territory. |

I'd say that if it were Canadian students in Korea, and they were being harrassed by Koreans, the whole thing would have a higher probability of being quashed.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
At least these guys got a sentence.
And yes, parts of Saint John scare me more than any other city I've been to in Canada. Including the biggest ones. Gotta watch your back a little in Moncton, too. |

Yeah, a 3000-word essay on multiculturalism.
Why should anybody be afraid of these pre-teen boneheads? There's a very good chance they're about to get brained real soon. |

Yeah. 6-month house arrest, too. And a record. For assault. They are minors. They weren't exactly dealt with lightly.
One or two of them are awaiting sentencing. I think theirs will be more harsh. That kind of thing isn't taken lightly back home. People don't ignore it. |
