Last Thursday, after recent rains, some mosquitoes started hatching around here. They were getting into my place at night, so I put one of those Home-Mate mosquito killing devices in my room. These devices work by heating-up a chemical-filled wafer, which evaporates the chemical into the air.

While running this the first night, my lady and I were in bed, and I suddenly awoke, shaking with my heart racing extremely fast. I had been drifting in and out, dreaming about how my wife and I needed to get in shape, etc. I awoke in a panic, and woke her up, babbling on and on about how we needed to start exercising immediately -- really weird, comically stupid stuff. She couldn't figure out what had gotten into me. I was having a panic attack. I didn't put two and two together until similar attacks started happening to me the next few nights. I was waking-up in sweats, heart racing, filled with worry and doubt. My dreams grew even more weird and life-like.

I have now come to the conclusion that foreigners do not need illegal drugs - they just need one of these mosquito-killing devices in their room. Now that I have removed the device, I have been fine.

So weird!

Does it smell terrible? How did you find it? I've been killing mosquitoes in my apartments literally every day since I moved in two months ago. It's driving me crazy. No idea how they are getting in. Please, help me!

Any place like HomoPlus, Emart, etc. Heck, prolly Family Mart. Just look for a lil' box with mosquitos on it, and maybe a pic of an outlet plug or something. You may have to buy two things--

1) a plug 2) a lil' bottle of the liquid you screw into the plug. (Some brands don't include the liquid)

This is the culprit. Smells like apples. I changed the title of the thread, because it was the Home-Mate version of the chemical killer that was making me freak out:

The screw-in bottles by that Epi-Killer brand were useless. I never had good luck with them working. They always have issues with the liquid wicking-up correctly.

Most of those contraptions I've bought don't work worth a damn. I like the bug zappers personally. The problem is I left mine on all the time and they aren't made to last, therefore the damn things usually stop working after a year.

Glad to know when I come back this week I'll get eatten alive again by the damn mosquitoes.

Bass, I didn't have luck with the liquid thingy that plugged into the wall either. Sorry to hear you had such a bad reaction to the other thing. That would be scary to say the least. I'm guessing whatever reaction you had wore off after awhile.

Yeah, the plug-in bottles don't work for me, usually. The wafer one I took a photo of above works for sure. But I wonder if it's a safe thing to use. Maybe that's why I don't see them around in the USA... bad chemicals.

Okay, so that thing is actually effective? I'm worried about my cats getting into it, though. Is it set up to where a cat would be able to lick it or dip its claws/paws in?

Who can tell me about getting a zapper? Just hearing that BZZT!! sound would get my panty wet, I'm sure. It sounds so sadistic and cruel--exactly what mosquitoes deserve.

The new rage in Korea are the bug-zapper racquets. They are made in China, plug in to recharge, and cost 5,000 won at the store down the street. The zap bugs really well. Kind of cool:

The problem is they only sell the zapper things from spring through the end of the summer. Most retailers take them off the shelf by this time of the year. If anyone knows of a place that still sells them, then by all means speak up please.

Bass,

That's pretty damn cool. I can play tennis AND kill mosquitoes at the same time.

They've got at least 4 of them left, and sell a small version of the traditional plug-in zappers as well. I think those go for 20,000 or 30,000 won.
