Even the name is stupid. Hockey?

Racetraitor nailed it: the game is expensive to play, and as such it is quite an exclusive club of people who can aford it. I think there is a clear relationship between how stupid a game is and how much equipment is needed to play it. With hockey, its pretty much as stupid as possible.

I played hockey with my friends and other kids from the neighborhood while growing up, and it didn't hardly cost anything: a pair of skates, a stick, a puck, and a shovelled off frozen pond in someone's back yard. That's true hockey, IMO. You don't have to spend a fortune on equipment to be able to play... Organized hockey - that, of course, is another story.

Golf - now there's a stupid game!!! Clubs (all 14 or 15 of them, + bag) green fees (or membership), cart, balls, striped slacks, stupid hat w/ a tassle... And, don't even get me started on the land wasted on this pompous game!!! Yet, as it's well known, most professional hockey players spend their summers playing this dumbass game.

I am a hockey fan... I know I shouldn't be posting here. Embarassed

I should've addressed this previously but forgot....

Crusher of Heads was (a) right that sports are a substitute for war and (b) wrong that soccer is an exception because of soccer hooliganism.

This may seem far-fetched, but one major reason I seriously believe Europe has gone from one of the most violent, war-mongering places on Earth to a liberal, pacifist wuss-fest is because of the immense popularity of soccer. Supporting a team, usually one of the teams from where a person is born (so you've the choice of Roma or Lazio if you're born in Rome and usually parents influence the decision too), has a tribalistic element to it - and that's just domestic soccer. International soccer is nowadays the only politically-correct way to express nationalism. At World Cup time in England, suddenly flags are everywhere and no longer symbols of racism. Soccer has become a vehicle for nationalism and that's better than many alternatives. Nationalism, by the way, is a natural and entirely defensible sentiment.

And - once again - hockey has nothing whatsoever to offer here.

I don't hate any sports, I can just never understand why people obsess over them.

Watching sports on TV is akin to being in a waiting room at a dentist's office for me. Its so incredibly boring and not to mention, repetitive.

How is being in a Dentist's waiting room repetitve?

The words that come to mind for a dentist's waiting room are more of the fear variety.

I've never felt queasy and numb watching sport on tv, although i have watching certain reality tv shows.

Nationalism as we know it has only been around for a short time.

Nationalism like religion is the cause of many ills in this world and is definitly not entirely defensible.

But to Canadians, hockey is nationalism. It is the one thing that is truly ours, that binds so many of us, and really separates us from the "other guys". Olympic hockey, and hockey as part of our image, is huge in Canada.

I'm at least as patriotic as any other Canadian on this board, even if I don't rub everyone's face in it. Still, I hate hockey. And because I think Wayne Gretzky is a douchebag doesn't make me any less of a Canadian.

You're right. Hating Wayne does not make you less Canadian. And sure, you can be patriotic without liking hockem just as I'm sure not all proud Americans love baseball or football. I tried to get that message across with "binds SO MANY of us" rather than saying "all". But hopefully you're not so self absorbed that you can't notice how much of a unifying factor hockey is for other Canadians, especially, those with deep ties to the country

I guess I didn't go to a rich enough school or live in an isolated enough gated community on the outskirts of town.

Sure, growing up in my rich, safe neighborhood hockey was everywhere. But come Olympic time or Canada/World Cup time downtown Toronto, including poor and some ethnic areas, would be just as abuzz as the burbs. Seeing celebrations from across the country on the news tends to make me believe this wasn't happening only in Toronto. And no, it wasn't just me and my rich "frat buddies" (god I hated frat boys) who were celebrating.

But hey, like I said, you're proud to be Canadian and you don't like hockey. I have no problems with that. However, if you can't admit that hockey is part of the typical Canadian identity... well, there's no point arguing with ya, is there?

I'm not saying it's not part of the Canadian identity, just that it sucks.

No!!!!!!!!!!!! You're kidding, right? Holy crap. Where would I be without your useful insights. And here I am thinking all those asian/middle eastern/carribean kids I went to school with were just white kids in costumes. And all those sons of immigrants I was playing hockey with.... I must have been imagining them.
