That's awesome. Good luck Dave.
I'd love to see a map of his route. I'm a map geek, you see. |

I'm a map geek too--old nautical ones, coastlines etc. Bloody expensive hobby it is.
I'll see if I can put the screws to Dave to post his route here--undoubtedly after he finishes the celebratory bottles of Screech in Newfoundland.
Right now he's limited to tourist-office courtesy PC's. |

Just tonight I met a Japanese engineering student, Taka, who is on his way from Victoria to St John's by bike.
Day 55 and he's in Ottawa. Is that a good pace? I have no idea.
I asked him if he did a lot of biking before.
He said no.
I asked him if he was biking with anyone else- no.
I asked him if he had a knife or anything that could double as protection- no.
Had he been to Canada before? No.
Wow, que cojones grandes!
I expect to read about him going over Niagara Falls in a barrel one day.
He's lost count of the flats so far, he thinks it's about 8 or 9.
We took him to some fireworks set to music (final night of an int'l competition; If you Could Read my Mind, La Fortuna, Total Eclipse of the Heart- a real mixed bag) and at the same time we were treated to the Perseid meteor shower.
Very cool to see shooting stars amongst fireworks, all set to music on a beautiful summer evening.
I didn't want to mention this before, but around the time that EDavid should have been in Ontario, there was in the news a report of someone who was killed in a traffic accident on a highway in Northern Ontario, in the middle of cross-Canada bike ride... I was worried it might have been him until I caught an update through this thread.
Anyway, go Dave go. |

Diamond Dave's Big Adventure update:
I was able to speak to Dave on the phone this morning, he's reached Corner Brooke, Newfoundland and has set off today for the last 700 k of his cross-Canada trip through Gros Morne (stunning place) onwards to St John's--he's trying to make it there in time for a Black Eyed Peas concert He's a little chagrained the ride is almost over.
After that it's back to Montreal and a brief bike trip to Ottawa for a family function. Perhaps a while later it'll be back to Korea.
He's still at 5 flats and 1 rim, but the list of replaced equipment also includes:
1 seat post, 5 tires, riding shorts, gloves, brake pads, 3 chains, and 2 carrying racks that have broken 6 times.
He also tells me he's lost 17 lbs which he attributes to his difficulties in staying warm in crappy weather, and his butt is seriously calloused ie: you can tell where the seat goes
For anyone contemplating such a ride you'd think it would be on the cheaper side, but according to the D-Man be prepared to spend quite a few thousand $.
Way to go Dave! |

17 lbs--much "redistribution" of body weight as well--has what he calls "Lance Legs" now....the "Hite" gut no longer there either
Approx 8000+ kilometers pedaled in 2.5 months--if that doesn't get someone into shape, I don't know what would. |

Dave's a great guy. I knew him as well from Hwajung. He e mailed me to say he just finished his trip, and he had one sore ass with a close up picture to prove it.
Way to go Dave! |

If we didn't know him before, we certainly do now. I believe he has now won his EslCafe fame.
Sounds like a great trip, though my crotch hurts just thinking of it (and I'm relieved that I didn't see that "close-up" picture of the butt callouses). |

Wow, reading the post from when I was on my trip just over a year ago almost brings a tear to my eye.
I have been back in Korea since October 2006 and resumed life of an English teacher again, this time more happily. I still ride as much as I can, over Chuseok went to Anmyoungdo, a 5 day tour with some friends. Was great time, but I wanted more. My Scott M.T.B. has lasted very well despite needing about 500000won in replacements since I have been back in Korea.
But my will to ride has not ended. I have a master plan to ride from Seoul to London on two wheels. March, 1 2009. Check out www.brakingboundaries.com for news (still under construction) much harder-core than my Cross-Canada-Cycle, but once that is done I would have cycled the world.
As a warm up to March, I want to ride from Vancouver to Montreal next June. I want a quick trip, hoping to cover 150km per day. Perhaps 6 weeks will cover it.
My question is would anybody be interested in joining me? |

Congrats on the ride. Always commendable and you are in the "zone" and thus, life is beautiful.
Will you do this on an MTB? Have you read about Kropp, I'm sure he'd be one of your heroes, he is one of mine....http://www.nytimes.com/books/99/10/10/reviews/991010.10rothcht.html
Why not do the RAAM as a warm up?
Here's another hero, an ordinary Slovene....

I wish you luck. I just have a beater over here in Seoul and I'm more a runner. but love just being in the zone and now injured, miss it more.
Dream big!
