| I know America is part of the west; I just don't like it when people make it sound like the west is part of North America. Probably similar to how Canadians don't like to get grouped in with the states or Irish/Scots don't like to get lumped in with the English |
What you meant to say:
I don't like it when people rub my nose into the fact that the 'West' is the United States and various associated minor states.
The truth only hurts when it should. |
No I don't i am quite happy being where I am from. Whats the old expression "it's not the size that counts..." |

Okay this really bugs me, when people from the states/canada refer to NA as the west assuming that the rest of the western world i.e. England, Australia, South Africa, NZ and Ireland are the same.
Noticed this alot in the tipping thread. Posters referring to the tipping culture of the west. Most western countries do not tip unless it is amazing service.
Please, the states/canada = North America, not the "west" |
I should've commented before but forgot because of the east/west misconception I felt my altruistic duty to clear up.
Might've worked in the OP's favor to mention Western countries that aren't English-speaking in his or her examples.
Blackjack actually states "the rest of the western world i.e. [which means "in other words"] England, Australia, South Africa, NZ and Ireland..." which suggests (a) s/he doesn't acknowledge Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (should've written UK) and (b) doesn't acknowledge France, Spain, Italy, Brazil and the many other non-English-speaking countries that are in the West. Some comical geographers on here!
Since Blackjack has been an uppity, politically-correct arse, it has to be said.
Also, tipping for the sake of it, like in the US, is extremely common in the West, although evidently not New Zealand, where punters don't tip for their fush and chups.
Inferiority complexes like in the OP are embarrassing. |

might just be a personal thing but when i think of [quote]France, Spain, Italy, Brazil and the many other non-English-speaking countries that are in the West[quote] i think european not western (well apart from Brazil any how). when I hear the word western I think English speaking (and not in a negative way. This is my view)
and mate all i am saying is i do not like being lumped in with north americans, how is that an "uppity, politically-correct arse" I simply do not being lumped in with someone elses culture, love it or hate it I am a Kiwi.
I am really interested in how you justify

As far as I see no Inferiority complex here, I am proud of where I come from .
Tipping? sure i will if they give money for above average service. If they do as they are paid to do then why should i give them extra. (yes i have worked as a waiter) |

Going by that then don't you mean tup?
Because tupping (unlike tipping) is extremely common in NZ, but it has nothing to do with either fish or chips. |

exactly tupping is probably more common down here in Australasia than tipping. |

| So if someone said they were from the "deep south" would the scientists in Antarctica take offense... |

| I've found that the majority of Americans don't tip except in certain situations or unless they receive exceptional service as well. Especially college kids, white yuppies, and most non whites. Except the Japanese. They are like fountains of cash. Bless their hearts. |
