I've been asked to do a cultural lesson for my public elementary school kids grades 4-6. I'm not sure what will appeal to them about Irish culture. Obviously whiskey and literature aren't going to cut it. I'm having a bit of a brain meltdown of late so can't really think of things to do.

I was thinking of tying it into the whole Hallowe'en thing by talking about Samhain and maybe the Newgrange sort of stuff.

Any ideas????

Give them a couple of 'Irish jokes' to open a discussion on character /national stereotypes...

What is the definition of an Irish poofter?

A man who likes women more than Guinness!

What is an Irish 7-course dinner?

Six Guinness and a boiled potato!

This should get you started.

I was thinking something along those lines, but maybe give them a shot or two of whiskey each beforehand so even if they don't get the jokes, I might still get a laugh. Then, read some Joyce til they all pass out.

Seriously, what is there about Ireland that elementary school Koreans might remotely find interesting??
- Halloween
- Titanic

Brain just started working again actually, and I came up with a few good ones
- Gaelic games
- Trad music
- Irish language

I think you are on to something with the SECOND set of ideas--especially traditional music. Try something with Van Morrison and the Chieftons.

And MAYBE, if your students are old/advanced enough, something with limericks.

Stereotypes and absurd caricatures appeal to this whole country.

Surely there are Irish equivalents to sambo figurines?

Just play ever album of U2. Then tell them that Bono F ing rules. Then tell them that Joshua tree is the most important point in history. I'm Canadian I would do the same but substitute The Guess Who or Neil Young. Laughing
