I'm not asking for any abuse or anything, but I've lived just outside Seoul, and in Western Seoul.....and after yet another spate of postings I have noticed the highlighting of the seemingly moral-breaking distance to Gangnam,..... I was wondering, once and for all, what the big deal was?
Whether it be Ilsan, or Mokdong, I've never had any need to go to Gangnam for anything. I'm just genuinely curious why a lot of people rate prospective job opportunities, occasionally, on their proximity to Gangnam?
I'm sure it's bloody fan-dabby-dozy and all that, but, what's the big deal? Seriously, I know, there are serious draws like (I'm thinking micro breweries for a start), but, really, what is the massive difference?
Is it just stupidly over-priced clubs and pretentious bars? There are plenty of places to get pished everywhere.
Please, somebody tell me, as obviously lots of people browsing the board have been offered multiple jobs in Gangnam, so what sets it apart? This means...don't bother replying saying.......
Oooooh it has fantastic Western amenities, and gyms, and an Outback, and a VIPS, and a |Converse shop, and a place that sells kimbap. That pish is everywhere.
Don't get me wrong, if I lived in Gangnam, I'm sure it would be class, but is there really anything to set it above any of the other areas? Of course I'm interested for future jobs. |

Who are you to peepee on Ilsan? It's a great place to live.
Well, what's so great about living in your broom closet (aka apartment) in Seoul? What's so great about constant noise and dealing with thousands of moronic drunkards and sexual perverts of every KIND (and I mean EVERY kind) every day? I guess that must be your thing.
Can't you just be happy you're in Seoul? |

Okay, I'll peepee on Ilsan.
It's the Jehovah's Witnesses harvesting field.
Too many snotty foreigners around.
And no it's not just me. Many foreigners I met while in Ilsan felt the same and two new recruits, friends from back home, are out there and they hate it as well.
I put it to you that Ilsan is the foreigner's armpit of Korea.

Ah.. I think the OP was about why people seem to value Gangnam so much, not why people would want to live outside of Seoul.
Anyway, OP, I've often wondered the same thing. I guess there are a lot of clubs, so maybe people who go clubbing a lot like to live near them so it's easier to get home after. Maybe the shopping attracts people. Perhaps the plethora of hot girls. |

I value Gangnam highly. My bus stops there and picks up from there. If it didn't stop there then I don't know where it would stop,so I wouldn't know where I was andI would be lost.
Gangam is a good place for a bus stop. |

edit: after realizing my chance to attack Ilsan had subsided, I decided to make a relevant contribution to the thread.
Opportunity to blast Ilsan seized, check.

Right.
I've heard that the fees are higher in Gangnam. I heard particularly that the private teaching **which is illegal and I do not endorse)**s quite lucrative. And occasionally I do hear rants about the beauty of girls from Gangnam but well let's just say you wouldn't want to see most of them coming out of a sauna (pockets of post-surgery redness lined up next to white patches of skin. Too many of them would look like a red-and-white checkerboard.) |

The only thing about La Festa that I liked was TGIF and Don't Go bar.
Although it is funny to point out that Don't Go bar has the triple comic effect of meaning "don't go home.. stay out your contract" or "don't go to that bar, there're foreigners in there!" or 돈고 the korean word for a*shole. Nice, but you can't build the foundation of an honest Korean ESL career on that!
Shall I bring up Jeongbalsan? Remember that movie 'The Man Who Went Up a Hill And Came Down A Mountain'? Jeongbalsan is that movie in reverse.
Do yourselves a favor. Find the running track. Stretch **really** well. Run south. Keep heading south on the running track until you reach the Han River. Exhale. |

cwaddell....i couldn't agree with you more. Everytime i see a job advert, the word gangnam is followed by a string of exclamation marks (as if to suggest that it's a great place)...
For example:
"Hot job in GANGNAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I've been there a few times. It seems to have a shallow and vacuous side to it (compared to the rest of seoul). I'd rather live elsewhere. |
