Not seen a thread on this for a while. I want to go this weekend but was wanting to check that it is a. On? and b. what is the best way to get there? I can't figure the KTX site out for the love of me. I want train times and prices and can't get them. Or is it better to get a luxury bus down. Not too bothered either way.

The website www.lanternfestival.org is good but not very informative. Any help would be much appreciated. Ta.

October 1st through 14th.

You can get train times here: http://www.yudeung.com/infomation/?pg=4_gyo.jsp Mugunghwa, I think that's the slowest one, 3 times a day from Seoul, and Sae Maeul, once a day. Not sure how much that will cost. Looks like buses go every 20-30 minutes, then once an hour at 10pm, 11pm, and midnight.

This festival looks awesome. I'm curious about getting a motel room. For Jinju residents, are there a lot of motels? I'd imagine a good many will be booked up. I'm hoping I can just walk up and find a vacancy, but I've never been to Jinju so I don't know.

The best way is to take the bus. It takes 3.5 hours to get down to Jinju. The KTX doesnt go there. The festival is ok, its fun for a day, maybe two.

Won't be able to make it this year unfortunately, going to Andong Dance Festival instead. But if you've never been, definitely go. A great time in a very pleasant little town. And if you feel the desire to pop over to Andong, give me a pm.

There are quite a few yeogwan and a big tourist hotel that line the river on the way toward the fortress and the festival site. The past few years I've been we didn';t book, just searched around for a room that was decently priced. You shouldn't have too much of a problem if you arrive in the morning and try to avoid the weekend.

PS Thought I might add a few pics to whet the appetite. Just go. It's a good time.

This is nothing compared to the Jinju Lampshade Festival. That's where we all get together with Jinju and wait til he gets the lampshade on his head. Then we pull it down and make like he's a pinata...

So Jinju folks, when's the best day to go to the festival? I'm thinking about going tomorrow for the holiday, but if there's something spectacular going on this weekend, I'll go again. It's only an hour, 3100 won bus ride for me.

Went to the festival last night. I was very impressed - didn't really know what to expect, but it was much better than I anticipated. Excellent view from a good-quality motel next to the river for just 50,000. I'd recommend pre-booking - that's what I did - as most motels turned off their lights to indicate no vacancies.

Enjoy the lights, atmosphere and some bibimbap with dongdongju at the festival!

I went tonight. It's pretty cool, but after a few hours I wanted to scream and pull my hair out at the general crowdedness of it. There were families camped out in the middle of sidewalks and main avenues of foot traffic and generally a lot of bumping and shoving. Overall the festival is pretty cool. I'm going again this weekend to get more pictures, so if anyone's going to be in the area feel free to send me a PM and maybe we can hang out for a while.

I plan on going this weekend. I'm looking at motel rooms in the area, but I'm curious where it'll be held . . . I'm looking on Naver and I see a park with a fortress and museum (along the river across from E-Mart). Is it there?

When you exit the bus terminal, just turn left and walk all the way down the street until you see an intersection with a big TV screen. You'll be able to see the festival from there. You can either cross the street or go under the bridge at that point. Either way will get you to your destination. You will also pass by lots of motels on the way. I've never stayed at any because I live so close to Jinju, but I'm sure you will be able to find one to suit your needs.

Yeah, crowds. At a festival. In Korea. On a public holiday.

Imagine that.

Went on Saturday. Fantastic spectacle, beautiful lanterns, realy pleased I made the long trip down. Agree with oneofthesarahs in that it's very argeybargey and can get a little frustrating, especially waiting 30 minutes queuing up to go over the bridge. I lost count but there was about 6 million Koreans there. This saturday coming up is the last weekend so I expect it'll be especially busy, but definately worth the visit.

Plenty of excellent photo opportunities if you don't have my camera, these were probably my best shots.

Will definately go to Andong next year for the mask festival.
