Last night, while I was in a bar in Pohang, some idiot got so angry with what I had said that he tried to beat me up. Rather than call me a liar or refute what he THOUGHT I had said, he ran to me, hit me twice across the face, and found guys struggling to pull him away from me. I didn't even throw a punch in his direction. Eventually he left, disgraced in our eyes by his own actions. I won't talk at length about this guy or how it came to this, because I want to keep this post as curt as possible. Rather I'll say that people who get furious to the point of violence at someone's words had better learn to control themselves -- or move back to their countries of origin, where they cannot further tarnish the waygook image. Before thinking of hitting someone, realize that it's not so hard to say "Oh yeah? That's BS and here's why"; to not do so gives the impression that the non-violent person was correct, something my assaulter did not realize. It doesn't help us foreigners when one of our own could do real damage to Koreans and foreigners alike, which doesn't even help the assaulter. |

Though it's been debated over and over on these boards, I think waygook is a cute way in which we refer to ourselves here. Waygookin would be proper, but you have to admit, if they can Konglishize our language we should have a go at theirs, besides I'd rather we refer to each other as waygooks than foreigners amongst ourselves... might as well call ourselves yang nom and really mess with their heads. By the way the title is literally inappropriate for the use of waygook, but your quote isn't.

Even '외국인' is a slur, try '외국 사람' or better still, '서양 사람.' Or don't even bother and just say 'Westerner' or 'American' or whatever your or another's nationality is. |

Was his name "Fred" by any chance?
He has a lot of connections there - I had to work with him in 2003 (against my will)... a complete moron..
he is from New York...
(but his parents are French) and he did his service in the French Legion...
he is a complete bastard, asshole, freak, drunkard, trouble-maker - beware stay away from him......
p.s. - If you want to get rid of him - report him to immigration - he has been here a LONG time on a TOURIST visa....
but don't report him to Pohang immigration - (he has friends there) - report him to Daegu immigration..... |

Serious question, man. Do you think Daegu immi would want to get caught up in a case in Pohang? I am sure they have enough work down there. |

Daegu Immigration is the Regional Office in CHARGE of Pohang Immigration - the Immigration office in Pohang is just a "small branch" of the Daegu Immigration Office - consisting of three (3) CORRUPT Immigraton Officers... |

He had been arguing very loudly with the barmaids about them overcharging him. They were using reason and he was hurling insults. I was upset about the way he was treating the ladies, all of whom are good-natured, fair people. They were visibly upset with him and even the bar owner had to get involved. The entire bar was looking at him as if he were a loud-mouthed idiot. He eventually paid the bill and began to leave.
I was infuriated with his behavior. Don't quite remember what the exact words were, but I had used the word "jail" and mentioned his previous life experience for the bar to hear. What credibility, I thought, does this guy have to argue over a two-drink discrepancy, and to shout at the ladies for it? I wasn't asking for a fight; I wanted to cut his "this-bar-completely-sucks" rhetoric down to size.
He thought my comment was slanderous, but rather than loudly broadcast that he thought it was slanderous to the bar and ask me to take back whatever it is that he thought I had said, he charged at me like some crazed lunatic and began hitting me. Seems kinda odd, acting unlawfully in order to deny an unlawful past, but the irony was lost on him during the experience. I said nothing, however, intended to provoke him. Just another typical bar-hopping idiot who thinks he has a right to hit people he's upset with.
It's never a single comment that gets people hitting each other. People like that come pre-provoked, so that any slight becomes a reason to attack. During the struggle, this guy expressed his anger that I have an MA and that I work for a place with an excellent reputation -- things he's known about me for about a year, and things which apparently loaded his fists (but which I've never rubbed in anyone's face). In fact, as he was walking down the street after his outburst, co-workers of mine overheard him bragging about fighting with someone from my school, after leaving the bar. So I guess I had been on his hit list for a while, and that the words mere merely an excuse for him to act.
PS -- CC, I know what the word "waygook" means. |

I've never seen so many fights as when I lived in Pohang. It was always juvenile BS between individuals frustrated and unhappy with life in that miserable town.
Pohang is a craphole. Why would you want to live there? My life improved dramatically when I moved Seoul. |
