Religion is only meant for humans - not animals. You have every right to enjoy uninhibited sex in lower forms of life like pigs (who have sex with their sisters...) or sparrows and pigeons who can have many more orgasms a day than humans. Humans are distinguished by the intellectual capacity to at least try to understand God.
The laws of material nature are meant to be harsh so that all people will realize (sooner-or-later) that real happiness can only be found in the spiritual universes... |

Yeah, this is a silly poll. Might as well ask whether philosophy promotes an unhealthy view of sex. Or ideology. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. |

God is clearly a sick pervert. I mean, he designed penises and vaginas.
My sister used to date a guy who was raised Catholic who could never quite shake off the religion. Every time after they had sex he'd apologise to her and feel very guilty. Not really a turn on. |
What do Catholics believe about sex then? ('scuse me for being ignorant) |
I don't really know, but I do know they believe it is for procreation, which is why Catholic families tend ot have large amounts of kids (clown car size). Also, premarital sex is considered evil, even if it doesn't stop them from having it. It just makes them feel crappy about it. Plus, masturbation is a sin.
It really excludes you from having a lot of the fun that God obviously programmed into our bodies. |

I've never understood that need to comment on a thread in which one has no interest. Obviously the poll is only to spark some interesting discussion. Sex and religion are always hot topics, didn't you know? Now, move along Mithy... |

I'm not saying that it's lacking in interest, just that the poll question doesn't mean anything. Some religions promote chastity, some promote huge amounts of sex (see Shamhat). A great deal promote something somewhere in between. Some religions are debatable on whether they even are religions or not. How could anyone generalize on something so broad?
Here's a similar topic to illustrate what I mean:
Does weather make the temperature hot?
1 Yes
2 Often
3 Sometimes
4 Depends
5 No

| I knew some Christians who thought sex was wrong *after* marriage. They were conditioned so strongly about pre-marital sex that regular post-marriage sex began to feel like an obscenity to them, so in some cases, it took years for them to begin enjoying it. |

It's a question which gives people something to think about, and they can interpret it as they like. Obviously rteacher is going to have something different to say than someone like mindmetoo. The discussion might be quite interesting, and no-one is really expecting to seriously answer the question. It's a starting point for conversation. This is a casual message board, where people are not required to speak accurately, scientifically or accademically. The level of conversation expected is about that that you'd get down the pub. I am not required to present my poll at the same standard of an accademic survey. You could have made the same point (which you are not alone in thinking) without dismissing the thread as 'silly' |

Right. So some people interpret it one way, some interpret it another, I interpret the question itself as silly. Look at my response as just another part of the whole if you like. I don't expect the whole thread to come crashing down because of what I wrote. |

I think religions can be grouped together fairly easily on issues like this. The big ones are all pretty close to each other, even if the more foreign and/or freakish ones have their own customs and attitudes.
Just for the hell of it, what are some ways that religion encourages healthy attitudes toward sex? I guess we really can thank religion for the institution of marriage, and monogamy. |

Likely a 'hung-up' attitude toward a few things. |

It also has the incidental effect of curtailing the speed at which STDs travel within the population. Monogamy is ideal in that sense alone. |

Yup. Nice bolding by the way. You actually managed to hit the relevant part of the sentence. Good job. |

| Current religious views (on the most part) world wide encourage an unhealthy view of pretty much everything in life, including morality. |
