I have an 8 hour layover in Hong Kong on my way to Europe for Chusok. Can I leave the airport and tool around in either in Hong Kong or Macau. And if I can, where should I go for big lights big city stuff, no sightseeing stuff.

Have you ever gone to Macau from Hong Kong? What is the easiest or cheapest way. Thanks.

Unless you are going to charter a Helicopter you won't have time to get to Macau.

In 8 hours just about all you will have enough time to do is catch the bus or the train and get downtown for an hour or two before you have to head back.

The bus is HK$33 and the train is HK$90 to get downtown. The trip takes just over 30 minutes by train and about an hour by double decker bus.

Yes, just to get to HK from the airport is about 30 minutes and then another 20 minutes to the boat to Macau. A round trip is 1 hour to Macau and 1 hour back.

You can catch a ferry to Macao at the HK Airport.

There are hourly departures from the downtown terminal and 5 times a day from the airport itself:

Mac-HK: 8S213 10:00 HK-Mac: 8S521 10:50
Mac-HK: 8S215 12:30 HK-Mac: 8S121 14:00
Mac-HK: 8S216 15:00 HK-Mac: 8S122 15:30
Mac-HK: 8S217 16:45 HK-Mac: 8S522 19:10
Mac-HK: 8S218 20:15 HK-Mac: 8S124 22:00

The jetboat to Macau is just over an hour EACH WAY + 20-30 minutes waiting time before you board.

It takes 20 minutes by chopper from the HK airport to the Macau sea terminal or Macau airport.

You also have to factor in clearance time for customs and immigration each way. Waits on the Macau side can often approach 60 minutes.

Unless someone charters a chopper and keeps it on stand-by while in Macau there is NO chance to make it back and forth in an 8 hour layover AND clear security/immigration (twice) to catch your next flight.

Interesting.

If the Airport ferry terminal is anything like the other ones, there will be people selling pre-bought tickets for a couple of HKDs more. Maybe you could get straight on a boat...

Assuming all goes smoothly:

Clear customs and immigration at HK Airport. 30 minutes.

Get straight on a ferry, go to Macau. 1 hour.

Waiting times. 1 hour.

Ferry back to Hong Kong. 1 hour.

Security, customs and immigration leaving Hong Kong. 1 hour. Pushing it, but it's Hong Kong, awesome airport.

That leaves 3.5 hours in Macau!

You forgot the time to clear customs going into and out of Macau.
Then you need to clear customs back INTO HongKong before you can enter the airport.

Leaves you about 30 minutes short of doing it and visiting Macau during an 8 hour layover..

I just got back from my trip and wanted to update this incase somebody else has the same idea some day. I actually had a 10 hour layover and then an 8 hour layover on the way back. The 10 hour layover I went to Macau. In the Hong Kong airport, I got off the plane and followed signs for the ferry transfer desk. I arrived at the desk at 3:10pm and booked the 1st avail. ferry which was at 4:30. I got on the ferry at 4:30 and arrived in Macau at 5:30. At 5:30, I arrived in line at the immigration and by 5:45 I was through and on my way to a cab.

I tooled around and gambled for a couple of hours. I then went to buy a return ferry ticket at 7:45 and the first one avail was for 9:15. I then walked down the street and walked around looking for a massage place and got a 20 US dollar massage. It was awesome and would have been 100 minutes if I didn't stop her so I could catch my ferry. Back in Hong Kong at 10:15 with two hours to sit a sports bar, drink beer and watch Rugby. It only took 10 minutes to get back through immigration.

I timed all these with my watch and wrote down the times as I did them, so they are accurate and not guesses.

It can be done if you really wanted to do it, but not for an 8 hour layover but with a 10 hour layover.
