Go this website http://eng.mvdrf.ru/?docid=8 and print it off. Glue your photo on top of Gorokhov Sergei Vladimirovich picture. This is all the proof you'll need.

My university doesn't give private info out due to the Data Protection Act in the UK. I could get them to send a confirmation fax I suppose but it could take some time. School wants it done by the 9th.

So they said I had to get a printout of the names of the graduates of my class from www.studentclearinghouse.org I told them that only some American universites are available there. Then my co-teacher's head exploded.

My school's not on that list. How not surprising Rolling Eyes

Not all schools are. It's a private company that many schools use to save the manpower of receiving and processing transcript orders.

I envisage some conversation between a Fake Degree Holder (FD Holder) and the school to be like this:

School: Dear Mr. "Fake Degree Holder" could you please verify your degree and transcripts.

FD Holder: Sure.

sometime later ...

FD Holder: I sent an email to my (fake) school and they verified my degree and transcripts. Is there anything else you want me to do?

School: Why thank you very much.

FD Holder: By the way, how is Ms. Shin doing with her ordeal? I hope that she doesn't suffer too much.

I think it is, firstly, incompetent by MoE & Immigration that the degree holder has to verify the degree and not the otherway around. Secondly, immigration should have enough security checks in place to mitigate the opportunity of fake degree holders accessing Korea to become a teacher of English. Finally, it shows some old Korean thinking that it isn't there problem but the other person's fault for having a fake degree. For example, no Koreans have problems with fake degrees ... ohh no no no. It is the native English teachers that are spoiling this fantastic and uncorrupt society. Rolling Eyes

Did you ever think that Korean DO check other Korean teachers for fake degrees. I bet you after the story dropped of that professor, schools all over the countries check up on the degrees of their teachers. In Korea, its real easy for the Principal or the Vice to pick up the phone, call Seoul University and say "Did this teacher graduate from there".

On top of the degree, you need to get a teaching certification, and those have requirements that need to be met to.

Where as Mr. Fake Degree Foreigner needs only a fancy piece of paper with illegible cursive to say "Here's my degree." Yes, I hate getting my degree verified over and over. Yes, its inconvenient. However, how's this any different than a job back home where they say "You need to go for random drug testing." In my opinion, having my work tell me to get drug tested is a bigger invasion of privacy than having them verify a college degree.

Even car dealerships in the US will ask you for a copy or to see your college degree.

When I asked my boss why they couldn't just contact my old uni (since it wasn't on the website either) he said it's because Koreans love paperwork. I told him that I was angry that immigration hadn't done their job right the first time.

btw, my uni transcripts are still in the finance office and have yet to be opened after 4 months. When I asked why I was told it's because they can't read English. Confused

edited for drunken spelling errors

To clarify, my school has a whooping 800 students, so I didn't expect them to use that service since 1. There aren't that many transcript requests occurring and 2. they are cheap bastards...understandable though...

I loved taking my degree in for verification a few years ago. I have two different degrees. The one from my first uni is written in Latin the one from the 2nd uni is in English. I always take the one from my first school so I can see the panic and confusion a degree written in Latin causes. Those were the days. What fun!!!!

The Data Protecion Act 1998 is currently being printed.

I will bind it and hand it over shortly to my co-teacher to submit to the education office. Very Happy about 180 pages worth.

Strange old conversation about it

KT - Do you know why they are doing this?
Me - Yes, because lots of Koreans have been found with fake degrees and they are trying to transfer the spotlight onto the foreign teachers.
KT - Yes.
Me - I give them full permission to contact immigration and check that my stuff was verified by them. Other wise you will have to submit the Data Protection Act I am printing off. 180 pages of it.
KT - I can't give them that.
Me - They love paper work hand it in.

Coming to think of it there were only 6 people graduating on my course. If I could remember their names I could type it up.

I fail to see the logic behind submitting official seal and stamped transcripts for every job, one would think after immigration has verified that one graduated university...there would be no need to give additional details every week

Ah but you might ungraduate between jobs. Duh.

Not a question of being cheap or not...studentclearinghouse charge the person requesting the transcript so don't think the actual school pays anything. My Uni is not that big either (3,609 enrolled) but they like to be on the cutting edge so they support any and all i-based services. Wow, when checking the current enrollment figure I found out that the school is the 7th most expensive Uni in the US. Glad I didn't have to shell out for it or I'd probably still be paying my tuition dept off... Very Happy

and i think thats the problem! why is having the actual degree and showing sealed transcripts not good enough? they want to have a list of names too that honestly you can fabricate yourself.
once they decide that it isnt enough what else are they going to ask for?
I have given my school my old student number and the phone number to my university but they told me to call and tell them what they said. I could have lied that I did it.
