Wow, how did you like the Kimchi at Park's restaurant?
It was swell, thanks.
How do you like D war?
I was the best movie, ever!
Have you ever tried mixing your spam with the residue that sits at the bottom of your bap (rice) cooker? So delicious?
Yeah, I did that last week! Awesome dude! |

Less meta.
A thread complaining about a person who runs a blog who covers a story about a girl who runs a TV exposing the dangers of foreigners who continue to feed the stereotypes when they post online. |

Perhaps people are innately disposed to whine even when there isnt really anything to whine about. |

That's no more true than they are innately disposed to display euphoria or find redemption.
People whine becuz it's easier to complain than to be constructive. When you're constructive others will poke holes in your ideas. This a good thing becuz it helps to redefine your original idea. But, alas, a bit of criticism is hard to swallow. So some people refuse to ever take a stand and be constructive. Instead they take pot shots at those that do try. I'm sure there's an Aesop's fable about it. |

| We all whine about the city or culture we're currently living in. Korea presents some difficult challenges. Dave's lets one blow off steam. Hopefully one uses this board to learn to laugh at the crap, learn you're not alone, learn that maybe that's just the way crap gets done here, it's not you being singled out for special punishment. |

you know, thats something I've always been curious about: sports enthusiasts.
Don't get me wrong, as a kid I used to enjoy running around outside.
Even now I like being active. Runnning, hiking... seakayaking is a bit of a passion. Mostly solo activities- never really got my kicks (boom boom) out of regimented team sports like footy.
so yeah, i have a lot of active interests- but i never (with the exception of boxing and fights) watch em' on tv. I've never followed a footy team, or given a shit about the cricket. Olympic games? Couldn't care less.
So for sports enthusiasts: whats the attraction for fanatically following a particualr team. Why the excitement for deciding who can hold a ball and run with it the best, or who can hit a round object with a stick the furtherest? |

To answer this question, I can only speak for myself. I grew up, like many American kids, playing a few different organized sports. This is where my affinity for sports began. My parents split when I was 12. Some kids turn to crime, drugs, self-isolation, books, writing, etc. when this happens. I turned to sports: baseball, basketball, football (American style). I watched and played all these sports from a young age, so it just stuck.
I think you either get it, or you don't, about a sports fan. I had a professor in college who would ramble on about how evil professional sports are and how they force feed the consumer masses. He did not get it and there is no amount of explaining that would make him get it.
To me, sports can bond strangers faster than anything else. In sports, the only thing that matters is if you can "hit a round object with a stick the furtherest", not your race, economic status, or gender. I don't really have a logical answer to your question outside of you either get it, or you don't. |

thanks for that.... I guess I understand afterall..... I love hiking and when i was in korea i used to regularly get up before sunrise and get to the top of the nearby mountain track just in time to watch the sun come up and over. Took a zkillion of photos of the same thing.
I used to try and talk about it to the korean staff at school... who of course couldn't get it. And the fact that i went by mself, alone.... freaky stuff- totally incomprehensible to most korean.... Either you get or you don't. |

Agree, but remember that ideas are born out of need. Need comes not from thin air; usually it comes from a problem. And the citation of a problem in order to determine need can might be construed as none other than "complaining". Some 'constructive ideas' are not the result of need and some need does not come from a problem. However, the majority of the time, there is first a problem, then a complaint, then a constructive idea.
On this board, the biggest controversies seem to come from the complaint stage of this model... because 1) people disagree about whether a complaint is sound and 2) people disagree about whether complaining is ever acceptable behavior.
The most constructive discussions come from 1, but people who argue that complaining isnt acceptable behavior are like people who say we dont need to breathe air in order to survive. |
