|
|
Damn it! I just can't seem to save money here and it really pisses me off ... I look at my bank account and wish I could save more ... I have been in Korea for more than a year and haven't saved much ...
at first, i made 2 million a month and i couldn't save ... i quit my job for something more plus privates ... i make about 3.5 million ... whether it is 2 million or 3.5 it is all the same ... at the end of the month my bank account is only a couple of 10,000 wons ... i blame my girlfriend, but i don't exactly wine and dine her ... i know where my money goes, mostly food + alcohol + good times etc ... at the end of the month, at the end of the year regardless how much i make, i spend it all ... breaking up with my girlfriend won't solve the problem ... i think it is a mental thing ... so how much u make and how much can you save or are you like me ... a personal disorder problem in regards to saving money in korea ... how can i solve this problem ... i refuse to stay at home and rent dvd's all day drinking water and eating ramyun ... |

Get a wife.
When I was single and living it up I would be spending about 1.5 a month on merriment. Since I've been married, my wife and I are down to about 800,000/month (collectively) |

This year, haven't traveled to much and made more money... have a propensity to spend too much on food and bike stuff.. Did pay for an airticket back to the USA and then back to Korea for a wedding.... STILL managed to save about 1 million won per month avg. |

I spend 3-400 000 a month. I live pretty thrifty, obviously. I only eat out once a week or so and cook at home the rest of the time. I don't eat meat and am the queen of the "discount rack" fruits and veggies (they're really good, seriously!) For entertainment, I do a lot of running and hiking with friends, playing board games, reading and watching TV on the internet.
Food: 100 000-150 000 a month
Entertainment: 100 000 a month
Bills: 100 000 a month
Clothes/Books/Traveling: 50 000 a month |

I spend about 2.5 a month. A lot of that is consumables: my girlfriend and I like to go out to eat & drink.
I'm on a very aggressive saving plan now, too, which is nice. Moving towards cheonsae... |

Dude, with coin like that you should be ripping it up and saving cashola. Here's what I used to do, its quite nerdy, but it fking works. Payday, go to the bank and send yr regular salary home. 'bout2 piont wotever. GO TO THE BANK EVERY PAYDAY....FIRST THING!!! next, privates cash...its stilll real money, treat it as such.
Here's the nerdy bit, takes about five minutes a month.....go to a store and buy a shitload of envelopes, just like you get paid with. Put the dates of the next four friday nights om 'em, and 200 k in each. That should be enuff for 2 reasonably big nites and a hangover pizza sat and sun morn if you stay off the top shelf. Dont get pissed and start shouting whiskey to anyone with the same accent as you ( a big fall-down for me!!) Once yr 200 k is spent, its DVD time. Too Bad.
Heres the good bit, so you dont feel broke, 4 more envelopes, open one each monday, this is yr play money for the week ('member you only have to make it till friday morn.) 100k in each, BUT you have to pay yr bills out of that.
You should have still some change. Split it evenly between clothes for yrself and stupid teddy bears n crap for yr g/f. I found in Korea the better dressed I was , the more moola I made. Dumb, but true.
Try it for one month and report back. Good luck. |

Well i have to strongly agree with your self diagnosis. I recommend a good book. "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind" by Harv T. Ekler.
Parts of the book are cheesy, however he talks clearly and practically about emotional scripting which basically subconsciously determines our financial future (and for that matter every other aspect of our lives). One of his quotes is, "give me five minutes and I can predict ur financial future." I've read the book several times and continually read it because its helpful and practical.
I invest the majority of a similar income to yours. |

Agreed...some people spend an outrageous amount of time doing private teaching, but then:
1. they always eat out because they have no time for cooking or shopping.
2. they pay someone to clean their apartment because they have no time.
3. they are so burnt out that need to go out drinking excessively when they do have some free time.
4. they buy all the new toys because they tell themselves they're making so much money that they can afford it.
5. they get a car or scooter or take taxis all the time because they have no time to walk or take a bus.
So in the end, maybe it works out about even. |

It's a natural urge to spend any extra money we have lying around.
You can kick this urge in the pants if you:
1.)Calculate much much money you'd like to save each month as a percentage.
2.) Upon payday, immediately transfer said money home or to a less-accessible account.
This way, you still have the money, but it's not lying around so you can't blow through it. Works for me. |

hahaha...I totally agree with youy. 50,000 for one month? I just spent 63,000 on food and drinks last Saturday night. I used to work with some Koreans who said they could blow 900,000 in one night in Seoul. I save some, but not tons like some people here. I didn't leave a small hick town to come to Seoul and still live that way...Saving is good, but we are all going to die anyway. Enjoy life...at least a little while you have one. Be a bit of a hedonist. But, don't be down to peanuts before payday each month. But, also don't be one of those people it sucks to work with because all they do is save, save, save...so they don't enjoy life. Whatever people here save....eventually they WILL spend it some way, some how. |
